I received my Tejon last night and took it out this morning after doing the air test. once at the park, which I have dug several silver and Wheaties. I started the GB procedure. I was unsure of the tones I was looking for! Is the tone suppose to be a slight hum or no hum at all ? I was able to achieve both! It took me a little while to start understanding the language, this animal was speaking. Once I understood I went over an area I had hit several time with my XL Pro and started popping out the coins I used the stock coil today. tomorrow I'll use my Concentric coil in some real trashy areas.
I one thing I liked the most about my Tejon was I felt like I was swinging nothing at all
The least thing I like was the knobs seem to turn themselves. I got several o rings to correct this problem. Also the battery doors hinges just don't seem that sturdy. But that why I got the" Lifetime Warrenty"

If you're worried about the doors opening on you I came up with a simple solution for them. The Velcro that comes with the Tejon can be cut into strips and make very nice straps for the battery doors.
This will work for the Deleon or any other Tesoro with the battery compartment under the arm rest.

You got a great machine in the Tejon. My Tejon talks to me, after awhile you will learn it's language. Don't use the tones, keep the center knob clicked to the off position and use vco, that way you can have a better idea of what is in the ground. VCO will tell you the size and depth in many instances.

About the battery hinges. Don't worry about the hinges, worry about making sure the battery door is securely locked. I lost a battery pack two times because it was not. Last time I lost my battery pack I was able to find it using my gps and backtracked through the woods and there it was. As much as I hate Radio Shack they have an identical battery holder, virtually indistinguishable from Tesoro's, and I would pick one up as a spare just in case.

Balancing is fairly easy. I really don't like a knob that turns in either direction forever, but it seems to work. You have to turn the upper left knob until you hear a tone, doesn't matter if it is a strong tone or not, just a good tone and then do the balancing procedure and balance slightly positive.

Threshold should be like the buzzing of a mosquito...for best results... all depends on your hearing and quality of headphones.

Clicked far left you get VCO(voltage control oscillator) with one set tone...turn it to the right and as you go clockwise the pitch gets higher..some like VCO for accurate pinpointing and some like regular pinpointing with your chice of a tone that you like..nice part is your choice..But I like regular pinpointing as I can size target better.

Battery doors are a lot stronger than they look and should last for years with todays plastics.

Read the manual several times and get the ground balance down path as it will give you more depth and stability and a little research doesn't hurt either with several field tests available and learned detectorists on the forum to help you...

All in all one of the deepest Tesoro's and once learned should serve you well without breaking your arm as its lightweight..

Go to a hardware store for O rings for those turning knobs and experiment as you want a slight drag but make them too tight may cause premature wear....

Troy's X series really conquered moving knobs but have idea what type he used...

Thanks for the advice I'll be going out today for a couple of hours. I'll try using the VCO tone. I have been playing around with tones. I would use it every where else, but didn't try just VCO. Also thanks for the Balancing advice. I was scratching my head wondering if I was doing it right

Dan, Thanks for your reply! After using the Tejon for the first time I went and got 1/4 I.D. o-rings. The knobs were moving all over the place, now their stable!
I did the mods on the battery doors using the Velcro. But I'll still go to Radio shack and get an extra battery holder
After using the Tejon a couple of times now I am convinced of it's capabilities as far as depth and sizing of targets. I have learn that this machine is a Nickle magnet, just waiting for the Gold to pop out of the ground

Hang onto that Tejon and don't make a foolish mistake like I did & sell it. I knew I wanted to try a different model Tesoro so I sold my Tejon, I had about a 1/2 hour before dark the last day I used it before boxing it up and I went to a school that I hunting many many times. I went to the kids woodchip area (swings,monkey bars,etc.) and got a hit & dug a small kids charm, you could fit about 2 of them on your finger nail they were s small. I decided to work the ground on the way to my car and imediately got a beep, dug it up and about 3-4 inches deep out came a gold ring. I said to myself I am crazy to get rid of this & I was. Some people are afraid of the Tejons power, you can turn down the sensitivity and it purrs like a kitten. Its just a great do it all detector. Steve.

P.S. I like the way the g.b. knob turns with no stop, don't have to worry about stripping it. The battery doors do give a person a hmm whats up with this feeling but not to worry its not a problem (I actually got to like the setup). If you or anyone else is going to take off the g.b. knob to put an o-ring under it from my understanding there is 2 set screws that hold the knob on not 1. I don't have a Tejon available to know for sure but I believe I have read this a few times.

Yep it's a nickel magnet... I found this 189? V nickel, 1898 barber dime and 14k Gold earring in a soccer field the first week I used my Tejon, the oldest coins to date from this field...

Actually Craig, I think the Velcro was intended for use as an arm strap but it's not listed in the owners manual as one of the parts in the parts list. I used it for the Battery doors because I don't personally think an armrest strap is needed for the Tejon.

I got out early today between rain storms with my Tejon for the first time. Man it is a excellent machine.. I Like it so much that i may sell my Vaquero.

I'll Hang on to this Tejon for a long time. I had my DFX for 4 years. Just got tired of worrying if I had the darn thing set right or which program I should use. After a while it just took the fun out of detecting. DFX just seem to hang on the wall the last couple of years. I have fun using my XL PRO as it is just a set and go, compared to the DFX.
Tejon has brought the fun back into detecting again.

Tejon does pop those nickles. Though I'd give the XL Pro an edge in hitting dimes; at least in my experience with the two detectors.

I like to run the Tejon in vco mode. I think it gives more information about depth and possible material than it does in the regular tone mode. In either mode the audio is expressive, but frequently subtle, so take your time and listen to it.

that's a very cool idea, haven't had no problems yet but i did it to my Deleon and will be doing it to my Tejon when i get it. thanks for the idea

Good luck out there with that new machine. I bought or traded for one when they first came out and never really got to use it much. Always trading, Trading. Like alot of guys did several years ago. When I think back on it, I wish I would have kept it also. I really like the Tesoro detectors.

I haven't had any issues with the doors coming open on my Tejon. I liked the UMax silver, loved the Golden UMax....but the Tejon....it's in a class by ittself. I am finally starting to be able to hear the different tones and crackles that it makes when it is talkin to ya. I still dig some pulltabs...but I am still looking for the gold....so I dont mind.

You are going to like it, once you learn its "language".
