My Safari Is Gone........

 but I do have an Explorer SE on the way:clapping:. The opportunity came along and I could not pass up the trade. The Safari is a great detector and I will miss it. I hope that being somewhat familiar with the FBS tones will give me a leg up on learning the SE. I'll still be lurking around here to see what all you guys are finding.

ngrelic,

I will be curious to see which machine you end up prefering after you have had some time with the Explorer. I am considering purchasing either the Explorer SE or the E-Trac and would like your opinions after you get a chance to play with the new machine.

Tom,

I'm thinking the iron mask feature will come in handy while relic hunting.....I already know it will be VERY deep.

Barry,

I need to learn more about the iron mask and the dual numerical readouts. I think I'll order Andy's book on the E-trac and Explorer.

I am in withdrawals here in G'Burg, Biblical Rain keeping us indoors. I think I have developed gills!!! The only relic hunting I have done was at a small cartridge show last week. Grabbed a nice .69 cal 1848 pattern Musketoon cartridge and a real nice .52 cal Sharps linen cartridge.

Nooooooo!!! You can't leave us!!!! lol

I hope you like your SE. If I had the opportunity I would probably move to an SE as well. Not that I don't like my Safari, mind you. ;-)

Dumb question by a rookie Minelab guy, but......Regarding the iron mask thing. If you maks out the iron wouldn't you miss a lot of good battle field signals? I'm talking cannon balls, shells and shell fragments, etc. Or is the iron mask thing different than iron discrimination? Onus

Onus,

It depends on what you are looking for. I don't know about the iron mask on the Explorer but on my Safari and the other detectors I have used I tend to discriminate smaller iron targets (Safari from -7 to -10). Any iron artifacts that you would find in that range are generally trash and not worth digging a hole for. There are some iron targets that are larger and will read around -3 that are worth digging. Musket tools, broken bayonettes and rammers, shell fragments, etc. You have to train your ear to hear the difference and try to determine size. A little blip sound is probably a nail (or worse the iron oxide remains of a long ago dissolved nail) that isn't worth the effort. A long tone indicating a larger piece of iron is generally worth the effort if you have already determined that you are in the middle of artifacts. Could be junk, could be a treasure. I was at a DIV event and got a signal that was large iron and appeared to be about 3-4 inches in diameter. I dug down about 6 inches and hit a piece of quartz that was about 19 inches by 12 inches. After a little more digging I pried the quartz out of the hole and the signal was even clearer. More digging and down another 6 or so inches was a perfectly spherical bunch of rusted chain links which I whipped into the nearest woods in disgust!!!!!

I have never found a cannon ball but I hear that you don't have any problems identifying it for what it is. Loud and large :clapping:

The iron mask is adjustable from all metal to max. I've been using just enough to knock out very small iron.
