My SE arrived yesterday and I'm like a kid in a candy store again! Need help on something though....

Hopefully I will get the hang of it. My first impression was a good one. It looks sleek and sharp. It's MUCH better balanced. It's very simple to just turn on and go...no matter what I read and heard.
I've hunted with a CZ70 for many years so I'm used to the VCO pinpointing...so I loved that improvement on the SE as well.
I'm confused on something though. I have read a lot of posts that say to hunt in AM with the iron mask at 28 to 30. The manual states in order to hunt in AM you have to decrease the ironmask to 0. If you have to do that in order to get into AM...then how do you get the iron mask set to 28 to 30 while hunting in AM?? Sorry...but I'm obviously new to this.

If you hunt in all metal (AM) you have no Iron Mask on, which means you have to adjust Iron Mask all the way to AM, if you want Iron Mask 28 you push on the Iron Mask button and adjust to -28. Hope this helps.

You are correct...you DON'T hunt in AM with it set to 28 or 30...you have to go all the way to get to AM. But when hunting in IM at 28 to 30, you are very NEARLY in AM. The hard core iron...rusty nails and such...will be the only things nulling. My feeling is that if you are going to 28 to 30, go all the way. But the SE gives you that level of granularity, so not complaining about that.

I hunted with the CZ-70 for years too...I still have it and always will. But the SE is a fun and exotic machine and a joy to hunt with as you get to know it. And as you noted, not NEARLY as hard to use as some would lead you to believe. I usually hunt in IM but recently went to "Learn" mode and made and saved a neat pattern that I intend to use at some very tough sites where IM drives me nuts but have turned up some goodies in the past. I ran one or two of every type of coin I've ever detected over the coil as well as bullets and buttons of all varieties. The result was that in the Smartscreen, I have this little "ant farm" trail from the top right to the lower portion where a nickel would show up and mostly else is ALL BLACK. The majority of the good finds I generally make in LAND HUNTING (I use my Excal for the beach with no disc ever) come in a surprisingly small segment. Saving the pattern and running those targets over it again, the all come in real nice. I'm keeping that one for the real tough ground. Of course you will still get a lot of items that will trigger a signal that ISN'T one of those things, but it will cut down on them a lot. Very versatile machine.

Here's the little coin and relic pattern I made. All items were passed over the coil flat AND on edge. Includes 4 different silver dollars, Walking, Standing, Barber, and Kennedy halfs, Standing, Seated, Barber, Jefferson quarters, all the dimes, Indians, LC's, War nickels, regular, V-nicks, and a few others as well as musketballs, minnies, flat buttons, Eagle, Great Seal, etc. etc. ALL THAT and this is all you get...amazing, huh? I was surprised at that, really. Of course there are no gold coins in this pattern nor are there ant rings and any number of other things. But there's a whole lot that IS in here.

with this detector; I will go to the learn mode and do the exact type of pattern you did. That is great info and I appreciate it. Thanks for explaining the iron mask/AM scenario as well. I understand now and will probably try mine at -28 for starters.
I am never letting go of my CZ70. I sold the cz7 I used for 8 years about 2 months ago...then turned right around and bought a new CZ70pro with a lifetime warranty. I can still go to places that I've hunted for years and pull silver dimes at 8"+. It will make the perfect detector for my wife to use while I move on to the SE.
I am looking forward to really getting into learning this new machine. I was honestly surprised as to how light and sleek it feels. I was expecting a heavy machine but the ergonomics seem okay to me. It feels balanced nicely. PLEASE keep up the posts with any new tricks or opinions you may have on SE settings.
Thanks and happy hunting

I appreciate the response. Any and all info and opinions are welcome here. I think I've got the IM/AM figured out now.
Thanks for the help

I hunt in IM 28 or 30 most of the time. I also clear the discrimination, so when I want AM, I just turn off IM. I forget who told me how to do this, but it was someone in this forum. It works well when I have a suspected target and want to get a better picture of other targets in the area, especially when there is nulling.

Good luck with it...I'm sure we'll be seeing and hearing of your SE successes soon. I can't wait to get back out with mine. Unfortunately, I have to work this Saturday...we're doing a server upgrade at work. Sunday is a fail-over day but if all goes well, I will be able to get some swing time then.

Minelab has definitely refined the Explorer a lot and it showed in the Explorer II and it shows in the SE...no more "Made by Mattel" jokes at the Explorer's expense!

You are correct in that it is nicely balanced and it seems ok but just wait until you swing it for about 6-8 Hours once. At first it is an arm killer but the more you use it, the more your arm gets use to the weight. I work Construction so I use my arms a lot and every year in the spring, my arm feels like it wants to fall off but No Pain, No Gain like they say. After you get use to this detector, you will see why it is the best one on the market for getting those Deep, Older Coins that other brands can't reach. Good Luck and HH.

I got cracked on my Harley a few years ago so I have quite a bit of shoulder/jointpain to begin with. I can definately see how jumping into a 6 hour hunt would give me some problems. I'm a fitness trainer on the side and believe me...I'm going to do quite a bit of shoulder conditioning before the hunting weather gets here. I honestly feel the SE it pretty nicely balanced though which surprised me a little.
Happy Hunting

Too bad you didn't have the old Stock Coil to try for 6 Hours or so, you would see then what I am talking about. Makes the detector feel like a Tank after a while when you first start swinging again after the long winter.

If folks just keep one thing in mind about the Explorer it should be this : It doesn't like a air gap between the coil and the soil so make a habit of steering, pushing, or gliding the coil on top of the ground and work it sloooowly once you find the target area.
This steering affect takes a lot of the weight load off of the user. Holding a coil up above the ground on a machine that weighs as much as the Explorer can make for a long painful day of hunting and it won't perform as well above the ground either.

I hunt in AM unless I'm in a lot of iron and/or trash. I've found that sometimes on really deep targets when you get a 31 ferrous reading that has just a little different pitch along with the usual low iron sound it could be a really good target. I have found deep buttons and bullets that came in iffy in 31 or 30. Sometimes the higher or different pitch would come in swinging one direction and sometimes you'll hear it only 2 or 3 times out of many passes. Square nails will also come in like that though. If you are hunting relics and it's not too trashy hunt in AM.

Hi Bryce,

Starting out with the Explorer in AM (this is just the lowest IM setting) or even in IM may be a little overwhelming for a new user. When I first started out with the XS several years back now an number of us used to open up a 1/2" - 3/4" square in the upper right corner of the screen in edit mode. This worked well for most coins (except nickels) and really cut down on the symphony of new sounds that the Explorer will present to you. As you gain more comfort then go to lower and lower IM settings (lower means that less of the screen is masked). This technique worked well for me when I started out.

Why would anyone want to hold the Coil off of the ground in the first place? I just let my Coil glide across the top of the ground so I can get the Maximum Depth out of my detector and I also go slow when I know that there is in fact old Coins buried deep. I have already gone thru 1 Coil Cover so far and I am working on number 2.

A personal thing I feel Bryce ~ our own unique hearing abilities dictate what audio settings we are comfortable with...
For me I like Ferr. when I'm in amongst the iron; (so I can hear the low tone it gives.)
And Cond. when I'm in a cleaner iron free zone like the beach...

I appreciate the response and will give both a shot in different areas. I have a perfect iron infested patch to try out ferrous in.
Thanks
