My story (sad):(

It's been raining for TWO-THREE weeks straight and sometimes a 30 minute hunt is a blessing. I thought all my fun was goin' to start because the sun was out this am.:bouncy: Then I realized the kids hadn't been outside the schools for 3 weeks to replenish them or the parks or tot lots for that matter.:sadwalk: Well, I had had a good time a few days ago for a few minutes (Lady in the trash) and figured the only thing to do was go to my trashy sites that no one wants to hunt. I don't have my sniper coil yet:shrug: so I've devised a method: sensitivity 2 bars and coins mode. It only covers the first 2-3 " but I overlap AS IF it was only a 4" coil. It started out pretty good with a dime and a penny together until a sharp pain shot in my lower back. Finally, it ended up with me taking my shirt off (not a pretty sight) and scratchin' only to be met by another mosquito!:argue: After swatting them for another 5 minutes, I got a dime signal-right in the MIDDLE of a fire ant bed! The first few probes (ouch!) didn't help, so I ended up cutting a shallow conical plug awwww-wch! Did you know those things still bite even when you've squashed them and they're almost dead?:drinking: Finally, I felt the target but it was at about 6" and was now reading a quarter! :clapping: This was gonna be my deepest quarter at sens. #2! After slapping the target out with the end of the screwdriver, it was a brass water coupling about the size of a quarter. I chunked the thing in the trash, and after I cooled off a bit, I thought of how funny it was, well, sort of . So I went back to the trash can to retrieve it and make a picture. Inside the can were little winged creatures with stingers! Now, it ain't so funny.:stars: Oh yeah. Yesterday I had to put the cats inside and spray their den for fleas.

I have had three or four run-ins with stinging insects in my career. I stupidly retrieved a clad quarter deep within a fire ant nest once. Stupid of me. I save those sites for early spring now. Got stung by a wasp or a bee this summer and got pulled over because the cop thought my ice pack was a cell phone. Good for a laugh. I keep a supply of Benadryl in my field kit.

Chris

Those little suckers bite hard until the end, mine was a dime in the ant hill, the stingers were in the ground next to a penny and no it was not a wheat. Just part of detecting I believe.

Yeah, I just wasn't expecting all this so soon after the long rains. They seem to find a way up the 10" shaft on my screwdriver!

Carry a small can of WD-40 with you. It will put a stop to their antics instantly. I use it on ants, bees, hornets nests, etc. Hair spray works good also. Sticks them up to where they can't move and also suffocates them.

Thanks-some fishermen have also used WD-40 for an attractant. I've also heard meat tenderizer (wetted) is good for the stings.

some common dish washing liquid mixed with water in a small spray bottle will do the same thing as the wd-40 and it's much cheaper. i tried it on wasps and it drops them to the ground quick, and they die in a few minutes.........roger

Whoa! I had forgotten about that. A deer hunter relayed that info a couple years ago and I meant to try that. Thanks.

Some good repellent containing DEETS...bugs are part of the hobby and yep Mosquito's are terrible this time of year especially with all that rain as they multiply in the puddles..Enjoy the good days as always going to be those bad ones...

I was hunting in this dry creek bed near my home and had some good signals on my gti2500, but the skeeters ran me off. waited for cold weather and the creek filled up and has been full ever since.
