Found this in a cornfield that also gave up minnies. It has U.S. and is made of lead. A bale seal? Were they used by the Union? Actually found 2 but the one on the right is in bad shape.
 
The field where I found it does overlook the railroad and the station was nearby
 
you'll see where the wire went through the lead and was crimped. This worked sorta like a lock on the R.R. cars. They could easily see if the load had been tampered with. Usually but not always these seals will have the R.R. line initials, place of origin of the load and the destination of the load all stamped in the lead. For example...V&T Richmond Bristol. That would be the Virginia & Tennessee R.R. and the load came from Richmond and was going to Bristol. hope this helps. HH
