Mystery holes opened ???

I recently was detecting this one park,,,i recovered some nice coins using the grass flap open . . When I returned the next day,,,I found my grass flaps wide open, pulled open,,a few of them. I went back and pressed them back down. Has this happened to anyone ??? its a small park with a few trees.......HH..Tim

woodland critters..... coons and what not probably i doubt any logical person would go around opening flaps of sawd let alone have an eagle eye for it.

You're right: I've actually turned around, after leaving an area, and seen squirrels and other critters open up hole/plugs. Because they must think "hey, my competition must've buried a nut in here" (because they sense a fresh hole).

I have found that the vacuum of a lawn mower will suck the lid off of a plug or suck the entire plug out of the ground if they are not stomped on really good. Digging plugs straight down with a lot of dirt on them really helps too.

I've had that happen when coming back to the same spot the next morning. My money is on skunks, because one of their favorite passtimes is digging for grubs. They probably smell the fresh dirt and pull the plug out seeing what other animals might have been digging at, or can just smell the grubs because I think they can smell they under the ground.

When that happens I don't use my hands to put the plug back in. Just my feet. If a rabid animal slobbered on that plug and you've got one tiny little break in your skin it could be a problem.

I think that is most likey happened....the grass is well kept..and the hole flaps are close to trees,,,,,,so,,,either its the landscaper or the critters looking into the fresh dug holes looking around. Racoons and squirrels abound around the area......That;s a good idea Larry,,,i will cut the plug deeper....thanks.....HH..Tim
