Navigating by the North Star

And I can certainly empathize with you on that. On those clear, [usually cold winter] nights, Alice and i will just take a couple of chairs, go out on the lawn and watch the stars. With pretty much zero air pollution here, you can see the broad expanse of the Milky Way and be absolutely awestruck.

Thanks Bud!!

a good one. I always liked it at night just poking along on smooth water with the stars out and water slapping at the boat. Very peaceful. Star navigation was the only way for awhile. Here our compass was off 13 degrees off true north. I'm assuming you
use those tree tops anchored down to make hiding places for fish. GPS is a wonderful tool around the water. Kinda hard to put a X on the water but that GPS sure does it. We used to set our trawls with them also. Kept the thieves away from the lobster pots.
When that didn't work we would set them in fast current so the buoy would be pulled under and only surface at slack high or low tide for about 1 hour.... Summer folk all thought those lobster pots were where the lobsters lived and they were there for the taking. Local folks didn't take kindly to that at all.

Sounds like your living the good life there.....

Good post.

I have been on that lake at night dozens of times and last evening seems to be better than any, even though the live well was empty!

Thanks, Wayne. You are too kind.

...it really does recharge my batteries in a way that words just fail to bring to light the rejuvenation from inside out. Thanks for reading and posting, my friend.

...but the story length was getting out of hand. Some day we'll see those stars under the Canadian sky together...and it will be memorable!

Brush tops are (in my case) red cedar tops cut and sunk in strategic locations in the lake to attract fish like bass and crappie. Lake Ouachita is 70,000 acres of man-made lake, made in the late '50's. The lake bottom was logged heavily before it was flooded and now, nearly 60 years later, the lake is becoming more and more devoid of good wood structure. So, we make "brush tops (or piles) in water that the fish will find as an attractant (we hope).

Thanks for reading, Mike...and posting back. You know how the night sky can cast its spell on a man.

...Except for my time in the Navy, I have been a "home boy" my whole life, here in Arkansas.

I plan to do some limited travel when I retire, but I will not be long for a "foreign country" but what I will be turning for home.

Yup, the brush tops are fish attractors that work great. We don't have lobester traps on Ouachita, but a man caught runnin' another man's trotline is takin' his life into his own hands!!!

Good to hear from you, bud. Glad you liked the story.

I remember many nights alone on the lake fishing for bass. It is a very peaceful time and catching fish is only part of it. I miss it for sure

I reckon I'm selfish, but I want to have a little left when I retire so I can enjoy life a little before I kick.

I made a promise to myself 32 years ago that I would retire at 60 no matter what carrott they held in front of me and I'm holding true to that promise. Maybe, Lord willin', I'll have a few years to enjoy it all before I get to where I cannot get around.

Good to hear from you. I was a beautiful evening on the lake.

Things are well here, mate. I have been wondering how you and the family are doing.

Why not give us an update? I retire at the end of the month and am looking forward to a new and exciting lifestyle. I hope to do MUCH more diving, metal detecting, hunting and fishing. I might even get some yard work done once in a while.

C'mon, buddy, give us a good story!!!

It's written on your heart and heard in your very words. No one can do an evening like that justice.

Thanks for takin' the time to read and post back.
