neat buckle I found today

Wow!! That is a beautiful buckle!! Congratulations on that great find! :super:

I don't think so Paul it is very thin, and I do not think it would be able to stand up to a horse. on another site I was told "it looks similar to a carbine sling buckle--Civil War Era. With the decoration, I'm thinking it's a ladies' buckle. Maybe 1860-1880. "

...I've never seen a buckle like that before....too cool!

that being connected with a carbine - looks like an upper social woman's buckle - like you said. Very nice find. Somewhere there's info on it. Let us know if you track it down, steve in so az

The "two prong" latch indicates it is very old, any idea of the metal?

That would be a good thing to as far as age goes, it probably pre-dates the "plating" process. I wouldn't polish it, the tarnish (patina), indicates it age. You could use a medium toothbrush with some mild dishsoap and gently clean it that way without hurting the value. Very nice and unique find!

Looks like it is copper or brass and was silver-plated when newer! Some lady was dressed in fashion at that time! Bet she was the cat's meow! :biggrin:

God Bless! :angel;
