Hello all, have not posted for a while. My problem is this, been hitting it pretty hard the last six weeks or so and picked up a lot of clad and the odd piece of jewelry here and there but only one silver coin. By the law of averages it seems like I would have seen more old coins then I have. I'm starting to wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Mostly I hunt in all metal mode with 99 tones and use the 10.5 MF coil most of the time. What I'm talking about here has taken place in three different local parks. Maybe there isn't much old stuff there, maybe I'm missing the deeper signals of the old coins, I just don't know. Any thoughts will be helpful. One other thing. Me and a friend hunted this old site that may have been a small farm at one time but don't know. Didn't find much but there was a lot of square nails there. I think that's a good sign and can't wait to get back there.

Ya can't find it if it's not there. Location, location, location. Also, you have to remember that detectors have been around for 40-50 years and that park has been hit a bunch of times with a lot of different machines.
Are you digging ANY deep goodies?? or even deep junk? I've been making most of my best finds at construction sites and old yards. Even then, wheaties and IH pennies outnumber silver coins. Older detectors that didn't discriminate to well could still find the high conductor coins...and they weren't as deep back then either. Don't get sucked into the "it must be my detector" as being the reason you aren't finding silver. The site, and the users skill with his machine(and proper coil useage) have a lot to do with it. IMHO if you find a virgin site, ANY modern detector will find the goodies that are there. Some more than others. I don't know about you, but for the little detecting I do, I can't warrant spending $1500 or more for a detector. Maybe when I retire and can get out everyday???? Good luck and HH. Hope you find a good site to help put your doubts to rest. Bob.

Thanks for the reply, have dug some deep junk and a couple of wheats but that is it. Just need to keep the faith and keep plugging away.

Keeping the faith isn't always easy once you start doubting yourself or your machine. Been there, done that. Keep plugging away(bad pun??). Once you hit a bunch of keepers, deep or otherwise, your outlook may change. Just remember, it's not always about the machine. Lots of factors come into play. I may be trying to convince myself with this post as I've sure been on a quest to find the perfect machine in recent years. All I know for sure is, I've been disappointed with the lack of finds with expensive machines(etrac for one) and I've made some nice finds with some not so expensive machines(garrett ace 250, shadow x2). I wish you good luck and HH. Bob.

Silver isn't always where you think it is and often times where you don't expect it.

We've hunted an area that we know was used in the late 40's and as a family found over 800 coins. We know that the place was never hunted before. Tons of wheats and nickels from the silver era only one 1964 dime and a 69 Canadian dime that was half silver. I've even gone back with the digger coil and still no more silver.

On another occasion my brother and I hunted a small local park with not a lot of square footage. We found some modern clad and Hotrod53 pulled up a seated dime! A few months back Hotrod53 found 3 silver halfs about 2 feet apart in the woods just off of a dead end street.

That 10.5" MF coil has done good for me finding silver.

Don't get discouraged.

Although the 10.5 MF is a great all around coil, the next step in trying to sniff out older silver coins from these type of sites may be the 6 inch DD Digger coil. The smaller coil, 3 Khz frequency and DD configuration will be better at unmasking silver coins in those types of areas with a lot of iron or aluminum ( pull tabs, can slaw, etc.).

Without question the location and age of the areas you hunt is the number one reason whether you get silver coins or not.

I would hit that square nail site hard.....but a smaller coil will definitely give you an advantage in that site.
