my partner and i are going back to the field where we have found over 15 coins already....plus a small hoard all stuck togeher dating to 1744. we have all the old maps and the president of the historical society trying to figure this site out...there is a house at the edge of the field dating 1775....but the field as at least 10 acre or more...there is two sections that we are finding the coins....but one of the sections is filled with old square nails bent into an l shape...no clue...but anyways...i'm not sure on how to set my machine up for tomorrow..i have been running it in the factory setting with fast off deep on...sensitivity auto plus 3, depending on the noise...and i always press noise cancel at least every 30 minutes or when i notice the sensativity bar has changed...then i playwith the numbers minus or plus..i press quick mask when the machine nulls and go back over it with the quick mask...i have found quite a few coins that way...just takes forever....i also do trash high in the expert mode but not in the user mode..wondering if that makes a difference too.. tone id multi..sometimes i go bacck and forth to neutral to difficult don the ground depending on the noise. i like the threshold pitch on normal....the pitch hold , i'm afraid i'm missing something...is there anything else i should be trying...i'm sure there is....but the settings i have are so noisy where i found that hourd of coins..i did find four more coins 5' from them dating 5 years older...and i know there is more there....sometimes the smartscreen, wich i go back and forth with, shows me fe of 01-27 and the co stays in the 40's...should i dig or what...i have been studying andy's book , but i'be only had the book two weeks and and the detector for 4 weeks...trying to get in as much as i can before the snow flies......thanks for any advice....this is the best place for it....thanks...ginger

Ginger,

If this place has not really had too much recent "activity" (chance for pull tabs, can slaw, etc.). Then I would not hesitate to run Two Tone Ferrous with a wide open screen or 01-38, 49,50 discrimintated out. This is the perfect place for it and you will want to dig every high tone. You'll soon learn what to leave alone. I can't think of a better place to use it.

I don't understand why you would discriminate 1 through 38 out. Am I misreading your post?

After reading what I wrote maybe I was misunderstood (its been a long day...and I wasn't detecting). Its basically the top line with the exception of the Silver dollar spot 40-45 just to be safe. The reason is, and I know this from experience as do others, the falsing that is associated with (for lack of better terms) iron wrap around. If I remember correctly Gaz, (from this forum and the MinelabOwners Forum) was about the first one to bring this to our attention. He can be credited for running in TTF and disc'ing out the top line (minus the silver dollar spot). His reason was you will get a high tone on the top line but it has always been iron. Those guys over in England hunt a lot of farm fields and this really works for them as they're going to dig it all anyway.

Goes4Ever also confirmed this as I have myself that a high tone in TTF, reading anything with a FE of 01 would be "wrap around" falsing on an iron object. When I get the chance I will set up this pattern and save it. Normally I use Conductive sounds so I just use my normal pattern, but in the right spots TTF can really shine, I have found some good things with it.

OK, I gotcha' now. Thanks!

so if i keep it on factory setting with all the tweekingand keep doing noise cancel and when i hear some nulling and re-check the spots with qick mask do you think that will work..i know i need to learn more menus...for sure..i really dont understand why there are two trash selections.... one is user mode and the other in expert menu...i dont use the one in user mode...could this be all the noise..

TTF is the way to go- not even an option from what you have described.
I have used TTF quite a lot and I will say that not ALL FE 01 is wrap around iron.
I dug an indian penny that was solid 01-30 (iron VERY close). If you use the Two tone ferrous enough you can
start to hear when the high tone is iron falsing and when it's a non ferrous signal. The falsing is annoying but I like to run TTF in an open screen
just because it's nice to have no nulling. I sometimes run in a little disc (factory relic) or top line blacked
with large silver accepted, but my personal finds have not increased with any added disc.
Try a few setting and see what you dig up, sounds like you could swing a cane and find some good colonial stuff.
Good luck

ok... thanks i will try that in the morning..hope i find some more colonials...we've only found 3 spanish reals there so far..but a crap load of colonials...i'll try the two tone fe for awhile...with an open screen...you mean quick mask...right? i have done this there for aq bit...but the field is huge...ialso keep checking my sensativity and adjust the auto plus 3 and negative...seems to help...thanks for all the info...time for bed. or i won't be able to put in my 6 hrs of digging tomorrow.....lol thanks...ginger.

gingerlm,
I have noticed that you have asked this question several times and as far as I can tell, haven't received an answer. I think that the two "Trash Density" settings you are referring to can be explained like this;

1) In "Patterns" the only settings that are saved are the discrimination settings (Screen only).
2) In "Modes" all settings are saved (Screen and User Settings).

This means that when you save your current settings as one of "My Modes", all current settings ( Deep on or off, gain, sensitivity auto or manual, etc.) are saved with that "Mode". By contrast, if you save as a "Pattern", only the discrimination screen is saved. So when you open a "Pattern" that is different from the one you are currently using, all other settings stay the same except the discrimination screen. When you open up a new "Mode", your other settings, (in addition to the discrimination screen) will change as well (based on what they were when you saved the "Mode").
*Bear in mind that the only experience I have with the E-Trac is what I have read in Andy's book and what I have learned from the Emulator. My new E-Trac will not be here until Tuesday but I have been doing a lot of studying. Anyone with additional information, feel free to correct me as I am just trying to help by sharing what I have learned from studying the book. I hope this is helpful,

thank you for clarifying that for me....i did read that in andy's book but it just wasnt sinking in...i'm starting to get this thing...now all i have to do is start to learn the discrimination screen....i've just been doing factory mode and treeking ...seeing what i like the best...learning about the sensativity and basiclly learning the machine....this is the first time i've really metal detected was this year...i only tried it a couple of times last year and didnt know anything..so i study andy's book if i'm not out metal detecting...lol....and i read the forum....this is the best learning tool right here ....but with little knowledge of the machine and a lot of research it has paid off...plus having a great machine..thanks again...ginger
