Need advice on freshwater beach C$ settings.

I went to a freshwater beach to search this past weekend and found enough bobbi pins and "scrunchies" to open a beauty salon. The problem I was having involved falsing on the black sand. Here and there it would indicate a solid 30's ID that was repeatable until I dug. I tried every combination of settings from All metal to Salt mode, to with discrim and without descrim. No luck. Can someone please give me a stepping off set of settings?

using auto trac? That along with a little lower sensitivity handled the worst fresh water beaches around here with no problem. Normally I could run it wide open at sens 10 & threshold 0 with no problems on black sand or hot rocks using the auto trac. Auto ground works in most cases but if you happen to balance in a low mineral area and then move into an area of higher mineralization you get big time false readings.

so many different combinations that I can't honestly remember if I tried auto track. I think I must not have though, because I had the sensitivity backed down to zero and the threshold up to 45 (argh). I doubt that I could have found an anvil, but I sure did find that darn sand (lol). Actually, I WAS finding small iron like the bobbi pins and I think I did find one new penny. I eventually headed for the unpaved parking lot and picked up some clad. It's never a bad day when you're out swinging the coil.

PS Auto track handles hot rocks too? There's a differnt area I avoid because of the way the Garrett 1500 went crazy with hot rocks.

If you remember Barnacle Bill's post about "aggravation beach" with all the hot rocks it was a similar situation I ran into with the C$. The rocks were packed tight together and the C$ gave constant high falses. I let it trac to the rocks for about 4-5 sweeps and then turned auto trac off. That let me hunt with only the occasional +51 +73(?) showing up.

Thanks for the repeat. I'd forgotten that and will try it, but my falsing almost always was a solid mid thirty ID. Usually 35.

to see if the C$ will track out isolated hot rocks and still give good performance. Mr. Bill or Bill L could probably help you on that one. Both of those guys do seem to prefer the Excel and Edge over the C$ for areas like that.

Maybe the ID EDGE (coming next week) will make it a moot point (fingers crossed). I'll report back. It'll be a good comparison situation.
