We need a little more info...
Something to reference the size. a known coin or measuring tape or ruler.
More pictures of the back, top, sides and bottom.
Where it was found.. civil war site, old 1800's home site or city park.
What it is made of.
That sort of stuff.
An interesting piece at any rate.
 
This item is brass about an inch and a half tall by an inch and a half wide oval cylindrical caved in on a side but I don't think it is part of the original design. Could possibly be sheath guard for a sword not sure!
 
Thanks all and thanks Brian you confirmed my suspicion this is a scabbard missing its throat. You nailed it Brian. I guess this is a nice relic find thanks
