need detector to locate brass

New member
I am looking for a metal detector for locating brass.
I am a member of a volunteer military honor guard and need to be able to find expended brass rounds
in grass so they don't get hit by lawn mowers and sent flying.
We are on a budget.
Any help is appreciated

Well I just tested my Sons Fisher 1212X on Brass Whistle, Brass E8 pin on insignias, copper fitting, depleted uranium, sabot penatrator, gold jewlery, brass nitro glyercine pill container that belonged to my Grandfather, and all kinds of coins. So I think it is safe to say that any decent detector will detect the brass no problem. In fact I even turned the discrimanation to 10 and it still picked up my E8 brass rank pins for Dress greens. Now my sons Fisher 1212X is not made any more but it is a very basic entry level detector that solde for $150-$200 new. The closet competitor in terms of great price, great performance, simple to use and is made in America and comes with a liftime Waranty is the Tesoro Compadre! If you go to Ebay you can buy a Tesoro Compadre for $150 and they will ship it for free! It has a no questions asked lifetime warranty! It only has 1 knob so it is simple to use. I am an Army Brat my Dad was a lifer and did 20 years and got out. That is going to be the best deal on the planet for a new detector that will do what you need it to do that is not junk and will hold it's value.

Expended brass rounds should be quite easy to find with just about any inexpensive detector. Try your local Wal-Mart or Radio Shack, they usually have Bounty Hunter machines in stock. Brass shell casings ejected and laying in the grass should send a loud, easy to pinpoint signal. I have been fortunate in being witness to the volunteer honor guard at Camp Butler National Cemetery on several occasions over the years so I feel compelled to say "Thank You" for your dedication and patriotism for our fallen military brethren, new and old alike.

You could buy a hand held Garret metal detector like the ones they use at the airports for checking passengers. It's not very expensive, it's small and easy to pack and easy to use. Since you're just looking for brass in the lawn you wouldn't need any extras like discrimination, etc.

While I agree that most ANY detector will allow you to hear the brass shells, I am sure the person looking for them is not very interested in wasting more time than necessary doing so.

What I am getting at is this. Often times there is other trash located near the surface of these events and made up of all sorts of different metal. IF you can choose a detector that can 'notch out' all metals OTHER than brass, your brass recovery will be a lot faster.

Many Bounty Hunter detectors have this feature which IMO is important. IF you decide on something different, at least decide on getting one with target ID or TONE ID so you can zero in on brass only.

Best of luck in your decision.

I doubt that their is that much trach in a Cematary really. People do not hang out their or eat at them or play around at them. I think it has been since before 1920's since it was popular to hang out and picnic at the local cenatary. I would be very suprised to find out their is a lot of surface trash. Plus all these rifles eject their brass in the same direction so all M14's will group their shells in a close area and M16;s will group the brass in a simalar area. I really do not think they need fancy notch functions or anything like that. A one knob unit like a Tesoro Compadre or Fisher 1212X is going to be light, fast, and effecient. Where can you get a new Bounty Hunter with warrantty for $150+free shipping. Plus if his Unit buys the Compadre if they own it for 40 years it will not matter since it has a lifetime warranty.

In my opinion, they are NOT looking to treasure hunt, so bells and whistles are NOT needed....Any cheap metal detector will pick up brass in the size of an M4 or m16 round....as stated earlier, as long as you know the area they are in, you should be able to find most of them with the naked eye...I would go to Harbor Freight, or order a Tesoro Compadre or Bounty Hunter Tracker IV...they are under $200 and will do the job just fine....
