Need Help Mounting Sun Ray X-1 Target Probe

I just received my Sun Ray X-1 Target Probe ( LEFT HANDED ) LEFT SWING .
The directions say to mount the prob on the same side that the switch for the probe is on . The switch on the upper shaft faces towards my body side . I'm "left handed" . the directions say to mount the probe on the same side as the switch . That would put the probe on my body side . Is this correct ?I thought the probe and the switch was supposed to be mounted on the outside ( way from the body ) . thank you for your help

yeah thats right, although you could do it either way, you want to be able to set the detector down and grab the probe, so it being on the inside is easiest.. set the detector down on the left side of the hole, and take off the probe with your left hand.. you can also mount it on top of the rod if you wish

I found that when mounted on the side I always got grass, etc caught between the probe and the body when returning the probe to the bracket. So finally put it on top and find that more convenient (easier to insert, etc) and less likely to have similar problems.

I have mine mounted on top
it is easier to get to and the clip on the rod will give a signal if you forget to flip the switch back after using the probe

Gord,

If the tall grass is a problem, then that is a solution. The penalty is that the closer to the coil the probe is mounted, then the more energy it takes to swing the detector.

Thanks for the reply Glenn - you're right of course.

However, I use a Birch Engrg HMK hip-mount kit on my Explorer and with this configuration the top mount for the Sunray probe works better. Didn't want to go into these details in my post as it would probably just muddy the water ... so to speak ;^). With the HMK the balance is pretty good and the probe is actually less awkward and easier to use top mounted (in addition to not getting grass and weeds caught in the bracket).
