Need help, Sovereign Charger Question?

My brother Kevin in Virginia just ordered a rechargeable battery and charger for his Elite. The problem they sent him the wrong charger which is for an Excal or XS and the plug won't even fit the battery. Will this charger work with a reduced plug to fit the battery.By the way he called Minelab twice and and talked with someone couldn't get an answer they didn't know.My suggestion send the charger back. Thanks Ron

I'd just send it back Ron. I would imagine it could be used if the voltage is the same.
But why not play it safe.

Send the charger back.
You might not be able to find an adapter that will work. If it is like my GT pack, it uses a VERY small plug.
Also, the Elite/GT packs use a different current rated charger than those for the older ni-cd packs.

Art, he said 14.3 and the newer ones are15 plus.I'm looking at the one for my XS and its 14.3.One concern he had was finding the newer charger in stock somewhere.Again Thanks Ron

The one he has is for the older Sovereigns nicad packs before they made the Elite with the NiMH battery packs. The one used for the Explorer, Quattro,Safari and the E-Trac use the same charger as the Elite and the GT. I doubled check in my price list and they show the same stock number.
If he cant find one from the person he got the battery from I think I have one in stock if he needs it, but would have to double check.

Art is correct, the nicad XS etc is 14.3v@ 0.65amp the Elite/gt/explorer is 15v@ 0.100amp, another thing is a nicad charger shouldn't be used for nimh as it may damage the battery(although dificult at such a small charge rate) but you can use a nimh charger for nicads.
This is one reason i find it strange that the new excalibur11 comes with a nicad charger when the battery is nimh.

Having said all that there are much better options for looking after your batteries at half the cost, those crap china made wallchargers are a ripoff(sorry minelab)

At least for the Elite/GT I think the wall "charger" is only a DC power source. The real charge circuit looks to be inside the battery pack behind the chart port. There is a little circuit board in there but I haven't looked close at it to see what it's doing. If the other detectors are set up similar I don't think it's going to matter if the wall charger says nicad or nimh on it, but I don't own those machines to confirm this. If that's the case then rather than send it back you can just cut off that plug and solder in the proper size one, paying attention to polarity.

The voltage and amp rate between the two is so slight that it won't make much of a difference. Again, don't take my advice unless you know how to confirm things on the machine. If the charge circuit is in the battery then it probably will work fine. Others can correct me who own those machines. Also, check out the other recent threads on here for the Accucel 6 charger. By the time you send back that wall "charger" you'll about paid for the $25 Accucel 6. It comes with many connectors and you can just use the alligator clips to hitch up to the two battery terminals on the back to charge it, which you have to do anyway to bypass the charge circuit behind the little plug.

Rick,I talked to Kevin yesterday and metioned one possible lead.LOL he should have kept the XS2 I sold him.By the way have some Sovereign coils to get rid of. Later Thanks Ron
