Need help with making my decision....Safari?

Bill M

New member
I have been using a XT-70 for over a year now, but I'm ready to move up. Safari or Explorer? Any advice would be very helpful.

Suggest you read this forum in depth. A lot of satified folks here... Safari is different and takes some getting used to especially the songs it sings but between the sounds, the indicator location on the metal type bar, depth indications... You go a detector second only to it's Minelab brother Etrac...

Enough from me. Safari is my vote for U!

My reasons for buying the Safari involved two factors: price and ease of use. The latter more so than the former, given the fact that I was moving over from a Tesoro Silver uMax to a Minelab FBS. However, now that I have some experience under my belt with the Safari I wouldn't mind moving up to the Explorer or even the E-Trac. Not that I'm dissatisfied with my Safari's performance, mind you. It's a great detector and can get pretty deep too.

I have a quattro and safaris are same just more updated. Great machines the Cadillac of Detectors full auto. . Safari shouldnt be any less. There Deep Machines.:minelab:

The depth is the same on the Safari and the Explorer. The Explorer has a lot more options / adjustments and a steeper learning curve. Either machine you choose will be great. The X70 is also a great, deep detector with the 10.5 med freq. coil, it is a minnie ball killer. The Safari recovery speed is the same as the Exp. SE as far as I can tell and much faster than the Quattro and previous Explorer models, but not as fast as the X-Terra. JMHO.

Hi,Bill. Did you get the message? I try one more.
Go for the Safari.I sold my Whites XLT,and bought a Safari this summer. The XLT is good, but when you get used to Safari you love it.
I am from Norway, and I am beginning to find more older coin's now.
The oldest this summer is a 8 skilling 1727 silver.

Have a nice day. Jens.

Forgot something,if you buy a Safari, also invest in a smaller coil for trash areas.

Jens.

Great machine!! While your at it, you may want to get a sunray pinpointer probe installed on your machine, you know, to go along with the smaller coil for trashy areas. I'm a very satisfied safari owner, also have a Whites xlt, and two bounty hunters. Whatever you chose to do you want to make the right choice.
You don't want any regrets or what ifs? Ron :detecting:

Can't speak for the Explorer but my Safari has been a joy to use.I just purchased the Sunray inline probe and it is a killer combo.I feel as though I have the best out there for my needs and now that i've learned my machine would challenge any Etrac/Explorer owner to a duel.I have found cool stuff at crazy depths. It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of the other 2.If it is under the coil the Safari will find it!

Thanks for all the help, what model of Sun-ray would I need or is their just one choice for the Minelab. I have heard negative remarks about recovery time. Maybe someone can explain this to me further. I do realize the Safari has been upgraded from the old Quattro.
Thanks again to ALL for your opinions!!!!

I think recovery time is more than adequate. It simply means when you find a target the processor needs time to take in the info and then reset itself for the next target. Some people have complained about it being slow. Are you going to be in a race to see who can find the most stuff in the quickest time ? Or are you going to take your time and enjoy this relaxing hobby and maybe find some cool stuff while unwinding after work ? In my opinion it is plenty fast enough, especially after you get to know the workings of the machine. That's what I'm talking about !! When I'm searching for stuff I like to take my time anyway. Lots of things have been overlooked or missed by searching too quickly. Hope your decision sits well with you, good luck in whatever you should decide. Ron :detecting:

It's the Sunray X-1 inline target probe.Works awesome, good depth around 3'' or so on a quarter and it allows you to use the detector's deccrimination capabilities. It basically gives you 2 detectors in one as the probe is a seperate 1'' coil.It is very lightweight and you can NEVER accidently have both on at once. You can even use the pinpoint mode with the probe that the Safari has built in.I have been using the pistol probe as well,it is VERY good, but does not descriminate and picks up all the trash in the hole when all that you want is the target.Absolute sensitivity is not everything. It looks awesome as well! I have found the probe of choice now and it is definately the Sunray. Enjoy!

About slow recovery time.

I run a Quattro, and boy is it slow ! BUT deep !

I use it in open areas (clean beaches, so recovery time doesn't matter.

If you plan to use a Safari elsewhere than on a beach, consider a smaller coil, a slow sweep, AND a reduced sens.

Even with sens at 8 it picks coins deeper than single frequency units would do in the same conditions..

This is fun,had a short walk with the Safari today.,found one 2 skilling 1778 in good condition. Value +/- 170 USD. 1 old silver shirt button+8 coins 1900 +
I use Detech 5"x7" coil all the time, don't think I loose mutch dept?
Safari is great.

Jens.

I made the remarks about it being slow to recover. Mine is slow, much slower than the GTI 2500 I sold so I could buy the Safari. But I talked to the factory rep and he told me all Minelabs are slower than most detectors in the market. Being slow to recover isn't a problem if you are in an area that hasn't much trash. But in a trashy area it really tells on you after awhile. In a trashy area you might be looking at an iron signal and pass right over a coin next to it unless you come back over it again after a short delay. Perhaps the smaller coil would help in that situation? I am having a hard time adjusting to the variety of sounds put out by the Safari and it is because I used Garrett products for so long I had to more or less start over. It may not be that way for you. So many people have had good success with the Safari it must be a good buy. Onus

I went from a X-70 to a Safari and what a difference. The Safari is deeper and no coil changing for different freq.
