Need help with Silver Sabre uMax

I need some help please. My older Silver SABRE uMax lost it's discrimination knob the other day. When I found it it seems the set screw wasn't tight enough so it fell off. I have a few questions about putting it back on so any help would be appreciated!

Where does the white mark on the knob go when the stem is turned all the way to the left toward min disc? Where does it go on the right when turned all the way to max disc? Where does a nickel, zinc penny, and quarter discriminate out on this unit? I have a 7 inch wide scan coil on this one. Does this matter? Is it normal for this unit to beep when you slightly bump the ground with the coil?

Sorry about all the questions but I really don't want to send it in just to have the knob put back on if I can do this myself at home. Thanks to anyone who can help and happy hunting. RDF

You can get a near identical replacement knob at any Radio Shack. Mine lines up with the "n" in minimum and with the center of the faceplate screw on maximum. It discriminates nickels out at around number 5, tabs and zincs a bit higher around 8 and you should be able to pick up a quarter, dime or half at maximum with possibly a bit of depth loss. The best thing to do is play with the settings on your own machine and remember or mark where the discrimination points are. The 7" widescan is fine, especially in more mineralized ground. As to bumping make sure your coil wire is solidly connected and there are no loose loops that can wiggle when the ground or other object is hit. Most combinations will beep if a solid object is bumped firmly enough. I use the 7" concentric on mine much of the time when hunting parks and tot lots. It separates in trash a bit better than the standard 8" and doesn't give up much in depth.

A good way to set up in parks and playgrounds is to swing the coil over a nickel while turning the discrimination to where it crackles and drops out. Then turn it back to where it just picks the nickel up well. This setting will ignore most small iron, some small foil, yet accept small gold jewelry and still not effect the depth much, if any. Unfortunately, it won't knock out pull tabs, but in order to make sure you don't miss gold, you have to put up with that. If you've memorized or marked where pull tabs drop out, you can thumb the disc knob to that setting to see if the target drops out, but if it's gold, it'll drop out as well. Hope this is helpful.
