Need ID on this Rock Please

anglais

New member
Is this Calcite? It has silver pieces embedded that look almost like mother of pearl. Approx 4 1/2lb wgt. Thank you for any help. Janet

Could be several things. Calcite, dolomite (or many other carbonate minerals), barite/other sulfates etc. Can you tell us a bit more about where it came from and any other rock associations with it?

If you have a college nearby, you could take it by and let them id it for you. Or a local rockhounding club. Often folks that put on rock/mineral/gem shows will have a table where you can bring in stuff to be id'd. Its very hard to be sure from a pic.

I have a similiar piece which was identified as calcite. Regardless, google search "lapidary club" along with your city's name and you should have no problem finding someone who can ID with it certainty.

-Nice specimen though! -David

Desert Rose is Chalcedony. Looks nothing like this.

RR, I've seen barite flowers called Desert Roses too.
