A friend of mine found this coin detecting a beach in Puerto Rico. I think it is a piece of 8, but haven't been able to match it to anything. HELP!!!!!!
I found the attached tracing at the numismatics.org digital library in an article titled Coinage of the First Mint of the Americas at Mexico City, 1536-1572. This picture was about halfway down the page. On your coin you can see one of the bars (Pillars of Hercules?) pointing towards the A of ANN. On your coin I can make out the S on one side of the pillars and it appears the P is on the other side of where the second pillar would be. The flipside has the large V shape. Many other coins on this page have the LVS you have on the flipside. I cannot make out the exact placement of the LVS on the attached sketch.

Unfortunately, this website did not give the exact year or denomination for this style of coin. In fact, it appears this pattern may have been used on multiple denominations with the reverse motto changing depending on the denomination (see attached). But hopefully this will give you a good starting point. Out of curiosity, what is the type of metal, and what kind of detector was being used?

If this is indeed a 1500s coin, that would be fantastic! Please keep us updated when you pin down the exact identification.

Glad I could be of help! Lapidary has been a long time hobby of mine, so I got degrees in geology and hydrogeology. I have been working in soil and groundwater contamination remediation, so my mineral and fossil ID skills are a bit rusty. But, if you find something unknown and interesting, go ahead and post some pictures, and I will take a crack at it - unless someone more knowledgeable can ID it first. :)

My dream was to become a geologist or paleontologist, but a few things got in the way. I can still identify most minerals and fossils, from memory. Now my passion is hunting rings. I have over 100 nice gold rings and over 150 silver rings. I have sold on 2 occasions over an ounce of gold scrap (wedding bands and damaged rings) but still have the good ones. My brother-in-law and I just got back from the Carribean and both of us found 26 gold and silver rings each, and over $30 in change. I've worked at honing my skill down to finding rings, just like the challenge.
