No, he's not saying that (although a literal interpretation of the text might seem to indicate that). The Sunray in-line probe goes about 2 to 3" deep, verses the stock coils with go 8 to 9" deep on the same sized coin target. But once you use the probe in the holes, you will come to the same conclusion: "how did I ever detect without it?". Prior to probes, you had to continually take your machine from the crouched position to double-check which direction to continue in (since, invariably, it's on one side of the hole or the other, eh?). But with the probe, you merely wiggle around and know whether to go sideways or more-down.
