There are three (3) layers of solid foam on the bottom; two (2) pieces that are 2" thick and one piece that is 1" thick. I laid the detector on the foam, traced it with a black sharpie, used a thin utility knife razor blade (4") to punch through the foam and saw out the pattern - then I finished it up by spray painting the foam with Krylon Fusion indoor/outdoor paint. Very easy to do - takes about 30 minutes from start to finish if you are taking your time. I use the same cases to store my rifles - custom cut that foam too. The case is air tight, waterproof and lockable!
