If you could buy any new detector and money was not a factor what would it be and why.

If you are new to detecting, you wont want to spend $1000 on a machine as you likely wont understand it very easily. It also depends on weather you want target ID or not. If not I recommend minelabs musketeer advantage. It is easy to use, goes very deep, excellant trash seperation and not to costly. However, if you prefer the Target ID, perhaps you could go with the fisher ID excel or Tesoro deleon. Both are easy to use, have good Target ID, and both have a lifetime warranty. But, If you have been detecting a while, and want a target ID machine, I would recommend the Minelab Explorer II Or Whites DFX. And finally if you have been doing it a while and dont want a Target ID machine, go for the Shadow X5. It is light weight, goes deep, and is very high quality. Most important is not what we think, you need to go to a dealer and actually try out as many machines as you can and see what YOU like. I hope this helps, let us know what you get.

For me that's and easy answer...Troy Shadow X5. Expensive, but light weight, well balanced, and it fits my brain. Ask 1000 people get at least 1000 answers. I don't take others opinions too seriously, simply everyone has some personal bias. I hunt with a RadioShack Discovery 3300 now (Same as the Titan 3000XD sold by Kellyco). I can afford whichever machine I want, but I just LIKED the 3300, so I bought it and never looked back. After all, this is a HOBBY for the considerably greater majority of us TH'ers and I believe it's wise to keep that in perspective. It doesn't matter what MDer you use...If you like it and are having fun, ignore what the others say. BBJ

For most of us the season is over. I would wait and see what new technology is introduced before spring. Who knows?- perhaps someone will finally introduce a discriminating PI and make VLF technology obsolete.

Yeah you can put a pro with a $200 detector up against a greenhorn with a $1000 detector and the pro will go home with the most goodies evry time.

That detector hasn't been built yet. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> In the hands of a capable operator all machines of the same class are pretty much equal with some having a slight edge under certain circumstances.
