New F5. Got some questions.

This is my second Fisher as I also own a GoldbugDP. I find the ground balancing process to be about the same, along with a few other functions, so the detector already has a familiar feel to me.

Using the suggestions I found on here from Mike Hillis and others, I run it at 80-85 sens and thresh around -2. Hit the Hi school last night and found 2 set of keys, some clad, pull tabs and the usual foil goods.
My gb is around 51, and I can run the sens and threshold higher without much EMI, although higher may not be better with the F5.

Here's the questions.
What happens when the F5 overloads on a target. Can't find anything in the manual for that. I think I know the answer, but I want to hear it from someone else first.
Can't figure out the A tones adjustment. Manual says it varies the pitch of the base tone. Does that mean it only changes the tones of iron objects, or does it make changes to the threshold tone? Like I said, I do have a hearing loss, but I am able to figure out the D tones just fine. I lean towards the D3 setting.

I did try out my new 5" Goldbug coil on the F5, and depth and ID #s matched up with the same for the 10" coil.

Thanks and HH
Tony

I really like this F5 machine. I am a tweaker by nature, and the F5 has lots of room for that.

When the F5 overloads, it means a big target not too far from the surface, or semi-big target on the surface or very close to it. Sometimes when you get the overload signal, there will be something metallic visible right on top of the ground. Some users have squawked about this, but when you get used to it it's a great feature.

If you are GBing at 51, you have some very inert soil. Crank the settings as high as you can and still have stability when the coil is in motion, you will definitely get more depth if you are in an area where that matters.

The A tones adjustment is for the tone you get in all metal, it won't affect the discrimination mode at all.

Good luck, Tony, it's a fine machine. I haven't used mine for a couple weeks because I got a new detector that I'm learning, and I'm going through withdrawal...

Thanks, Marcomo. I may not have stated my question very well, let me try again.

When I run my coil over a large or shallow target, the detector overloads. I understand why this happens.

What I am asking is, what indication does the F5 give in an overload situation? For comparison, the Goldbug gives you a low grunt, kind of like when you touch your speaker wires on your old stereo. Kind of like a buzz. When I hear that, I know the detector has overloaded.

The display goes blank on my F5. All displays go away for a split second. No power meter, fe meter, phase, gb, nothing.

I guess I'm asking is this normal in an overload? I know the detector is working, I am finding stuff.
Just trying to learn the machine.

Thanks
Tony
