New F5 user

So I went out this weekend and found a few things.. Old button I'm still trying to figure out what is engraved on it. Some kind of name. Connick or something.., clad, car keys, pocket watch guts and a bunch of other stuff.. My detector was going crazy today by jumping targets..It would go from Foil to quarter to zinc to dime or some other crazy order.. A lot of the time it was a can or something.. I never found anything good from it.. Does anyone know why it does that? Also, is there a chart floating around for the F5 for items found and what they read on the screen?

Hoping you can help me on this one Mike or anyone else good at finding gold with the F5. I tried it on my gold necklace.. It hardly hit on it...I got a very faint noise and the screen seemed to jump from foil, nickle and tab. I had the Gain at 50, Thresh-0 and Dis at 10. no idea what I'm doing wrong at this point.

I can tell you are really into this chain test.

Use the single tone mode. Put your threshold at + 5 or higher, raise your gain to 60 if you can. Put your discrimination at minimum setting (no disc) Ignore the numbers. Wave the clasp over the coil and listen for the tone. Test both of them. You will not get much depth on it. Maybe 1-1/5", 2", maybe 3 inches max. Then raise your disc to around 12 and see if you can still hear it. If you can still hear it at a setting of 15, that is very good. You will not get a good TID number on a chain.

Chains are found by two ways....1st - you hit the pendant attached to the chain and decided to recover it, or 2) you are actively hunting just for chains at places where you have a good chance of finding chains, which means you are mentally prepared to recover all those tiny signals in a location where you think chains might be found.

At this stage in your learning curve, you might want to save the chain hunting for later :)

Hah nah.. I'm interested in everything.. I just like to lay different things out and test. I'm probably getting ahead of myself a bit. I just feel like being able to pickup on the harder to read targets and understanding what i hear/see will help my progress overall. right now, I really just enjoy using the thing. I'm sure I'm missing plenty but no worries. It's all fun. I found a bunch of clad today in the park. I guess I don't really know how to properly tune my MD when I head out.. if that makes sense? Typically I use the ground balance for disc and leave it around 10, leave gain around 50(is it better to raise the gain until it gets noisy?) and I leave the thresh at 0. I guess all that still hasn't sank in yet. I never mess with tones or freq. I thought tones was more of a preference?

Thanks again

Tim

anyone of yall that has the f5 need to read mike hillis posts all of them he is the f5 master. thier is a fourm on here that a guy posted it all not to hard to find think its under learning the f5. as i am new to the hobby myslef and fisher f5 is my fist detector i ever used. very good detector once ya get used to it i found a musket ball today with it. takes alot to figure all this out i tell ya. still tryin to figure out why i was told to only dig signals that had good signal both directions, but thats what i was told bye mike the f5 genious so.

Gold can show up as Iron to dimes with the F5. What determines where its placed on our scale is the size of the gold piece from what I have read. The best advice I can give to anyone is dig everything. Tabs section is the most common area a gold ring for the F5 will show up, hence the dig everything hehe and yes digging tab after tab after tab is so disheartening I know but one day you be so glad you did :) I'm still waiting myself but I know it'll happen some day hehe Hope this helps some out. I'm still unfortunately still under winters effects up here in Wisconsin aka snow on the ground :( hehe but will be hitting Arkansas here in less than 2 weeks. So if your in AR save me some stuff cause its been so long since my MD seen the light of day lol
Happy Hunting everyone
