I had a brief play with an Infinium last week and
would like to ask other owners wether they think
this one performed as per usual. The test was
done with a 3 grammer on the ground and the
response appeared to be a 'triggered' noise right
up to a height where it suddenly disappeared.
It appears that the ground noise is kept quiet
and a target triggers a response as in some old
VLF designs?
The response sounded like a "spting" noise all the
way to sudden death. The detector also appeared to be swing speed dependant, that is it had to be
swung unusually slow to get this response and the
target signal would disapear if swung at normal
SD speeds. The coil lead was wound around the top
of the stem in a loose coil and touching it in any
way would cause the detector to emit a very, very loud response. The outline of the enclosed cables
could be seen through the black sheath and appeared to be ordinary individually sheilded.
As the owner hasn't any contact with any other
owners at present, I wonder if others could comment on this as surely it must be designed to
perform better than what I saw?
I understand that it has a pulse rate of 700/sec
and this alone would create a need for a very slow swing and depending on how the pulses are processed and wether some are subtracted and sacrificed which may lead to this slow swing spead.
Any comments from other owners as to wether any of
the above is normal??

And could anyone tell me why my post ended up in
such a mess, staggered all over the page??

Did not notice this effect with,in my case,a ring on the ground but it was exibited in an air test. Sweep speed for best results did need to be slower than any other P.I. I have tried but not excessively so. Still trying to find out if the machine I used was faulty in any way as no one seems to mention the discrim. sound as being other than hi-low or low-high whilst my low note gave the large drag signal which did not make the detector any easier to use.

Thanks Brian, I will have to wait and see what
others think and I am sure the reports will come
in eventually. The mates Infinium loses the
"spting" sound if the coil is moved closer and
swung faster, it then gives more of a threshold
sound but vertually looses most of the depth.
The cable appears to be either rubbish material
or incorrectly earthed as it can't be touched
by hand and any movement in relation to the stem
causes false signals, I wasn't game to suggest
using it as a hip mount. Maybe it's not operating
to specs but how would you know?

I've used two different units, and what you describe doesn't sound like either one. Take it back to the dealer and ask to listen to another one from stock.....
