New Garret Scorpion user

Hi all from Downunder.
Just purchased a Scorpion and intend doing some detecting here in the Northern territory Australia, looking forward to some finds. I have been practising with the scorpion in the back yard with different samples and seem to have it worked out. Cant wait to get out in the fields and give it a good work out. I have the crossfire coil fitted.

If anyone has any tips for using the Scorpion that would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!This is a wonderful community and a great place to share info!That Scorpion is a great machine for nugget huntin'/electronic prospectin'.
As far as tips go, I'd say wear headphones so that you can hear the faintest of singnals and changes to the threshold. Check the ground balance periodically as you go. Dig every signal. Don't get discouraged diggin' up a bunch of junk. That signal that you feel like passin' up might just be a gold nugget!

Howdy There Razor!
Welcome to the Scorpion fraternity! Be patient with the Scorpion a it has a bit of a leaning curve. Start off in auto, and definitely use zero discrimination to find gold, dig all, the softer sounding ones are smaller gold. You Aussies are blessed with honking big nuggets which will hit hard so dig them too!
Have you seen the Scorpion vids on Youtube? Yes by all means do a search on the net and pay no attention to the detector bashers, they probably never had the wherewith all to learn the Scorpion. It is a multi-faceted, versatile machine. Learn the TR mode to distinguish from the hot rocks of which you'll find aplenty. After a while you will spot them by eye.
The Crossfire coil you mentioned, was it the round one? They were too sensitive for prospecting, the ellipticals are the way to go.
The round Crossfire Goldhunter coils are good for coin and ring hunting, I'm looking for an 8.5", but Garret doesn't make them anymore. There maybe a few down under!
The famous Australian Hand Of Faith nugget was found with a Garrett! Post some pics of your finds, remember some folk never find a nugget for years, do your homework! Good Luck and Happy Nugget Shootin' !!

Yep- They are dandys, when I use mine I KNOW I am getting everything that is there, Headphones and do a lot of digging, No gold where I am, but I get EVERYTHING else =here's a pic of my KIDS

I've never heard a negative remark about the Scorpian so I
think you got yourself a good detector.

Congratulations on getting a great machine for gold, coin and relic hunting. And it's one of the few VLF analog machines available. For maximum depth when hunting in the gold fields, keep the audio cranked up as high as possible, and listen for subtle changes in audio. For coin hunting, I turn back the audio, as I like to get a simple clear sound on my coins. I have the disc set up to pick up my coins, which happens to be at the default position. At this position, it bangs harder on holed targets like pulltabs and rings, both silver and gold then coins.

Hi all

Thankyou for all the info. For pennyfinder I have the 5"x 10" coil and have been able to work out the hotrock signal using samples in the back yard. I just finished reading a story about the Hand of faith and it mentioned it was found by a Garret. Not the biggest in the world but the biggest found by a detector.

I have the Garret headphones with the unit so use them all the time. I have been doing alot of research on the Tennant Creek area and have some good tips on where to go so planning a trip down there in April, so fingers crossed all works out well.

Great machine you got there....and good input here from the Garrett peeps. Make sure and watch the video of Charles ground balancing the Scprion. You get that down and you'll figure out the rest. Put threshold as they recommend in the video, if its too high you will miss small nuggets.
