New Golden uMax

Just got a new to me Golden. Took it out for a test run this evening at a ball field. Ran it no notch, min discrimination. Had the clean sweep coil on it, Noticed lots of jumpy in between tones. Nearly all were tabs or old ring pulls. Couple of high jumpy tones were dimes though. Is this the nature of the beast or can it be adjusted to minimize this? It's not really a problem. Just looking for info. I know it will take time to learn a new machine. I'm just excited. Feel like a kid with a new toy!

Do a search on things about the Golden that Mike Hillis posted. He posted a lot about set up of both the old and new toned units and I seem to recall he would use a clean sweep on it.

Those tabs and old pull rings are right in the conductivity range you want to be digging to find gold bands and engagement rings.

I used to have one and in multi target locations it can get confused as to what tone to give and sounds a bit like a duck on crack, found some good things with it

That's great! The way that leaned it was to put a lot of different targets on the ground and started swinging away. You'll get more depth when you use less discrimination and keep the notch switch in the off position. Reading some of Mike Hillis' posts was also helpful.

My recommendation would be to put the concentric coil back on and learn the tones and the various responses to different targets with that coil, because it has a smaller detection field. The 18 in wide scan could easily be picking up more than one target, making it difficult to identify what is below the coil. Only after I got really familiar with how the golden sounds would I use that coil.

Good advice. Got a 5.75" inch in the deal along with the stock 8x9. I'll test them both this afternoon.

With the notch control switch in the 'off' position you can use the notch width control knob to move the audio tones around. I set mine at around the 2:00 o'clock position so that a foil cap will just be breaking into the iron tone from the nickel tone. Also at that setting, the upper end of the audio tone break you will find that most beaver-tail pull tabs will be breaking between the zinc and nickel tone. Mike Hillis sets his at around the 10:00 o'clock position. He says at that position the nickel gobble audio tone is in the range of most gold rings that are lost. Me being a digger, I like the 2:00 o'clock position better, because I like digging most anything that sounds good above the lower end of foil range. Do your own test on gold rings, coins, pull tabs etc. to find what suits you the best. You'll find that Golden is a fantastic machine if you'll take the time learn how to use it. I hit one location with it that was loaded with the same type beaver tail pull tabs and I was working myself to death digging them. I finally had to set the notch width control knob to point where they were just breaking perfectly between the zinc and nickel audio tone and it was clear sailing from that point forward. I just ignored that breaking type audio tone, because I knew that there was no way that I could dig them all. I've found a gold ring or two at some really hard locations to detect using that method. Oh yeah, once you find some positions that you like using, use a super fine point permanent marker to mark those locations. They can be removed with a Q'Tip and a little rubbing alcohol if need be. Here's another excellent use of the notch width control feature and very well demonstrated showing what it's capable of doing. After watching the video, I sold my old tone Golden µMax and purchased the new tone version. It took a little time to get used to, but I ended up liking it a lot better. Mike is not using the setting that I was talking about above, but it clearly shows how to use the notch width control feature.

You guys are excellent teachers. Took my new Golden uMax to the same old sports fields I hunt regularly. Set the disc. To min with no notch and ran the notch width knob about 10:00 like you recommended Mike. About 30 minutes in got a nickel tone with zinc tone flutter mixed in. Mikes gold tone ...... right Mike? Just popped it with a screwdriver, only 2 inches. 14k white and yellow gold. Still learning I know. Dug lots of trash. Don't know how much of that was excitement because I sure wasn't listening too close after that beauty came out of the ground.

Yes it is. 7.7 grams. Fits my big ring finger and I haven't been called little since elementary school. Sorry for the upside down pic. Rotated it on my iPad but it still came out that way.
