Second time out with the GQ.
The first time didnt go so well. My ears still hurt a bit from all the banging made by every swing. I minimized that by turning up REJECT and SAT speed. Found a few coins.
My second time out, after a lot of advice from here, including Mr. Bill and Mr. Foster, went a much better.
I am now running REJECT at MIN and SAT at 1/4 turn above SLOW. THRESHOLD is set around half and I turn down the volume of my headphones to reduce the banging caused by each swing to an acceptable level. I now swing much slower, compared to my Surfmaster, to minimize the pendulum effect too. I am using SAT speed (slowing it down) to get a threshold tremble (any body else doing this?). I am mostly in the slow side for SAT.
I have not been very successful in getting a constant audible threshold "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" like on my Surfmaster. What I am getting is a " Hmmm....Hmmmm.....Hmmmmm" which is coincides with every swing. I wonder if this is how its supposd to be?
I am finding stuff though. A lot of nickels, quarter and dimes. Deepest so far on my second outing is 3 scoops for a nickel. Thats about 8 to 10 inches.
Surprisingly, the GQ does not BANG too loud on a penny like the surfmaster. That is a good thing. The reverse reject technique is working well for me.

JT, when I had a Goldquest SS it was the same way with me. I'm sure that is the way the machine is made we just have to adjust so volium is not so loud . I found that a good set of headphones helped me. With the GQ Aquasearch I have a volume control which helps. I still get the loud noise in the swing but will make adjustments next time out and will also test and make sure I don't loose deept. Will keep you posted on my results.

Hi JT,
Don't be afraid of turning the SAT up to half way, or even more. This with make the GQ tune quicker to the changing beach signal without noticeable loss of depth. It is one of the facts of life that having a detector running at 10uS, you are going to get more response from the wet sand. You could turn the REJECT control a notch or two back to reduce the effect, at the cost of losing a bit of small object sensitivity. The response time of the GQ is considerably faster than the Surfmaster due to its 10,000 pulse per second rate compared to 700 or so. This will make the whole thing seem livelier, plus there is no series diode in the signal chain which smooths out low amplitude fluctuations to give an artificially smooth threshold.

That while gold prospecting with mine that I would have similar experiences. I did alot of testing and even alot of mods on mine....which is now owned by Paul in Ca.
One of the tricks that i used was to turn the threshold down until it was gone completely...this was usualy around the 9:00 oclock position on my threshold. Now one may think....ohh gees I am gonna loose small targets. Not so...I was hunting for gold nuggets in the 1-2 grain range and I lost almost no sensitivity to them this way...I lost a tad but not much.
You jewelry guys are seeking alot larger targets by comparison so turning the threshold down in noisy ground is not going to loose you any real finds. Now I used to hunt like this ALL the time. How far down i turned the threshold depended on how noisy the machine was.
Ohhh sure..if the threshold was dead steady and there were no ground effects then lowering the thrshold would cause a loss of those real deep targets that only caused a slight threshold warble. However the GQ SS does not run with a very threshold in most ground as any slight change in coil height will cause a corresponding threshold change.
This was why I found and decided to stick with running the thrshold at a 0 to sub 0 level. I was still finding small boot tacks at 3 inches...which is like you beach dudes finding earing posts at a couple of inches.
This then allowed to me dig any noise that came through...or atleast resweep any hit. The GQ is so sensitive that it will still hit on 99.9% of targets with the thresh set to 0 or below. With the thresh set at a 0 audible level or below it would greatly reduce noise from ground and salt without any real loss on valid targets.
I tested this over...and over..and over again. It works well. Of course one would have to find out for themselves what level works for them and if they loose any REAL depth. Real depth is what you would loose when actually hunting...not the depth you loose in a simple air tests at home.
