I have been hearing that for a years now, maybe just wishful thinking. Garrett is pretty busy selling lots of AT Pros and AT Golds,
Ace 150s, 250s and 350s. and presumably raking in the profits. I don't know if they have the time to update the Infinium and
quite frankly it performs quite well as is. Some small updates might be appreciated by various users such as
1. Lighter for non waterproof nugget hunting.
2. A button for max discriminate instead of a dial
3. Some users would prefer some larger coils.
4. Some users would like a single tone instead of two tone.
5. Some users would prefer a straight shaft.
6. More sensitivity for smaller nuggets and/or greater depth
These are just OPINIONS I have heard SUGGESTED and in NO WAY AM I SPEAKING FOR GARRETT OR THEIR PLANS.
RUMORS ARE JUST RUMORS FOR NOW I BELIEVE.
I personally will continue to use mine to good effect just as Garrett designed it.

I guess they could try to reconfigure the Recon Pro.
As is It does not work in Aussie gold fields and has stability issues.
There is not a chance in Hades that Garrett could come up with a detector that will outperform the latest Minelab PIs. On the other hand it may be that Garrett are not all that fussed about gold detectors and will continue to concentrate on Coin, Relic and Treasure hunting machines. because that is what the vast majority of detectorists use their detector for.

Based on my calculations from various forums, the Minelab GPX Series are simply not too popular simply because of their price and weight. And yes.....Garrett takes great pride in designing metal detecting equipment which is affordable, very popular and work quite well.

I had no idea that Garrett was responsible for producing so many detector models. Wow.
I had to look at several resources. A lot of people don't really know how long garrett has been making detectors. Next year is Garrett's 50th Anniversary. It will be interesting to see if Garrett has any new surprises.......

Yes Garrett have pumped out a few metal detectors. Whites also have a very long list. Minelab are just the baby on the block but already have the best gold detectors. Garrett have never produced a seriously good metal detector that will punch through extreme iron mineralisation aside from the Infinium..... Come to think of it , No other brand can match the Minelabs in high iron minerals. On the other hand Minelab have only just caught up to Whites and Garrett in the Bells and Whistles stakes on the coin and relic machines.
Australia is going through the unfortunate process of closing off all areas for gold fossicking and prospecting by amateurs (pick and shovel swingers and hand held metal detector operators) and I can see that extending to the beaches, Heck the clowns of our State Govs want to make it illegal for kids to dig holes in the beach sand (kiddy sand pits) They think they could be held liable if somebody trips in a hole and hurties their little selves.
This is what happens when irrational extremists get into positions of power in Government.
So metal detecting will soon be dead here along with a lot of other natural human activity in our bush and wilderness areas and we will all have to start selling garden gnomes and jars of home made jam and chutney from road side stalls outside all of the Heritage listed old gold mining towns.

They made a detector called "the playmate". I hope it was good looking

I recently went to have a go at Wedderburn here in Victoria, when I got to the spot I wanted to detect there was a sign saying "cant do this, cant do that etc... detecting was one of the cants! There are a lot of reserves and the likes going up too. You can detect in most of them, for the present time that is, but it wont be long before they say you cant. They say we can and let us, to lead people into a false sense of security and get them used to all the signs and reserves without any fuss from the bush users. Then in the future I imagine they will say "nope, we have changed our minds you cant detect in them, see, they are reserves!" Ahh well, find it while we still can. Thanks for your replies everyone.

It was suggested (by a Garrett person) that I get the AT Pro Gold, skip the Infinium LS and get the so called 'Extreme' when it arrives. Opinions? BUT, I would like to own TWO detectors ... the best VLF I can afford and the best PI. I THINK a serious hobbyist needs both type technologies (Advanced VLF plus Advanced PI) to cover all types of detecting, land and beach/sea (not including scuba which I consider very specialized), from small gold to jewelry to coins to relics, shallow and deep in varying soil types. This leads me to this question or thought: Why hasn't someone developed a true dual technology machine, (i.e., VLF and a PI)? A one technology machine would be OK, if it could go as deep as a PI and have the flexibility of a god VLF. Did I miss it ... is one out there for under $2000 or so? Maybe this new Garrett 'Extreme' can do both? I hope so. Truthfully, I like both Minelab's and Garrett's craftsmanship and appearance the best of all. IMHO, Minelab has the best technology (even though very pricey) at this moment, but I can help but think that Garrett will be pushing Minelab's technology soon!

The Infinium has magically gone up in price here in Australia it is now around the $1600 mark. I bought mine 3 years ago for $1250. Even taking into account that the Aussie dollar is now at 92 cents parity that is quite an increase.
I wonder if that is because of the new Extreme? pricing being over the $2000 mark?
Garrett has taken a very long time to improve their PI detector as far as prospecting is concerned. But these are commercial decision

There was a combined VLF and PI unit on the market a few years back but I donot recall the brand . Possibly one of the Deepers detectors. It fell by the wayside for reasons unknown to me.
