NEW looking for advise

holi

New member
Just buying my first metal detector and looking for advise. I would like something good on the ground and maybe something that can go in the water. Any advise would be great.

Welcome to the forum, holi

I use a Minelab GT..love it's accuracy and depth...great on wet sand, dry sand, and in the water...

Glad to help. Depending on how much you want to spen, a machine that is water proof will cost about $700 new or more.
If you want one that you can wade with in the water most will do this, just don't dip the control box in the water.
The Garrett Ace 250 is a great starter machine with plenty of features that most mid range machines have.
Be careful if you buy on-line. I also recommend that you don't buy at a department store, or an electronics store. I would only buy from a reputable metal detector dealer. I know a good Christian one if you need a great dealer.
God bless!

Mike

where do you live, what type of hunting will you be doing?

Welcome to the forum holi - I would suggest you visit the online forums for the different detectors and read a lot of what the guys are saying. Then make a decision and go with it. Also, in many cities you can rent a detector for a couple days to try it out. Basically though, you will have to go with one and get used to it over a period of time. Don't be too quick to change machines - learn it before tossing it.
In my opinion the perfect place for a beginner to get experience finding & digging would be in tot lots, the kids play areas in parks & schools.
Good luck, keep us posted, steve in so az

no matter what you pay for the detector, if you apply yourself and go out most week's you should pay for it in a year's time. steve in so az

Well, the magic question is how much you're willing to spend... I've dealt with Mike's friend and he could surely help you out. Even has some used ones that could save you some money and get you a good machine. So you know, there's no "magic wand" out there. Like Steve said, you really have to work at learning your machine, whether it costs $200 or $1300. If you happen upon MD reviews, make sure they're from actual users and not sponsored by a manufacturer. Go to the forums and ask around about specific models you're interested in.

Good luck

a unit for fresh water use. It can be used in salt water with the sensitivity lowered. Not much depth is lost if you run it at 6 or above. Also most land units can be used in water up to the control box. If you can chest mount the contol box you can hunt up to waist deep water being careful not to get the control box wet. Hope this helps some. If you have more questions drop a line.

Welcome, holi.....it's so nice to have you on board and posting with us! I have only used White's Detectors and never water-hunted amount to anything! The loop isn't made for water and will float so you have to weigh it down with something. We tied on sandfilled socks but like I said my ex and I didn't do much hunting in the water! Mine works on the sandy beaches and there is a beach program already on the Spectrum XLT or you can program and load in your own! I don't think it goes as deep as the Minelabs but I have found lots of silver and coins with it, some gold and a few relics! Like Steve said don't give up on whatever you purchase as it takes time and patience to learn how to use the one you choose! I haven't detected much in the last few years because of ill health, but I sure liked getting out in God's beautiful world and digging up whatever may be hidden! Lots of junk is dug and you need to take all the trash with you and not leave it in the hole, or by the hole and fill your holes back up as neatly as you are able to do! This way more land to hunt won't be closed for detectorists to MD in!

Keep on, keepin' on in faith and with patience and you will do great! There are a few who find a gold and diamond ring the first fews time out which pays for their detector! I haven't though, but it can happen! :)

God Bless and please join us again and post often along with pics of whatever you find! It is interesting to hear and see what others have found!
