New Makro Racer, today

oleterryg

New member
My Makro Racer (I think it's also called a Red Racer}, arrived a day early today. Made me very happy as I was sitting on ready set go. I am going to give you my initial
experience, but keep in mind I am very new at MD, right at a month, so I don't know much. But I do have 70 years of living. My other MD is the entry level Garrett ACE 200, of
which I have used and enjoyed. It found a long lost tulip ring and around 15 coins, and lost of nails and other iron and foil. All in our back yard. So it works. Now, my wife is taking possession of the ACE, and I the Makro.

I unboxed the Racer, read the assembly instructions, and without hurrying had it going within 15 min. Not a whole lot to do. The instructions said it included 4 AA batteries, but no batteries.
No fuss, I just slipped some extras I had recently purchased.

Negative first thoughts: The visual display box was not as big as I imagined. I had read, on this forum or another, a reviewer stated that I is one of the largest displays he had ever seen. Maybe it is, but I didn't think so. However, I have to say, after I took it outside and did a little hunting, the size is just fine. I would like it larger, but no problem, no problem seeing anything.

The screw and nut that holds the coil on will not hold up, I just know it won't. Hopefully I am wrong. I'm going to order a couple of extra sets just to have them "in case". In case I am in the field when this happens.

Initial good thoughts: It works and I think I used it pretty dog gone well for my first time out, which amounted to around one hour. No coins, but I did find at least a dozen nails, screws and bolts, and foil, and my first bottle cap. This was all in a sandy beach area down by the river behind my house. I know I didn't want this stuff, however, it was pulled out in an area where
my ACE didn't pick it up. Some of the nails were as much as 8 to 9 inches under. In all metal mode, I found the bottle cap around 10-11". Pretty impressive I thought, at least compared to what I have. I never really got a true signal indicating the possibility of a coin. I guess there are no coins left in that spot of soil.

While I have lots to learn about using my Racer, especially GB, I found it not as difficult as imagined. I used all three modes, and not sure of which one I like the best. I found myself easily switching back and forth between the modes, even on a found target. Interesting. I am finding that the machine will not let you do what it can't do, so this will help me to figure things out.

Pin pointing the Racer: I found this so easy, and very very accurate, and the depth was reasonably close to correct. Oh, I love the pin pointing. Almost don't need the Makro PP, but I am not ready to give it up yet, or never. My ACE doesn't have this feature, so you can imagine the good feelings I have about the PP function.

Coils: Racer came with the stock coil, which I think (?) is 7"x11". I also ordered the 5" X 4.5" DD R13 round coil. Since I am searching only on my land for now, as I learn, I installed the
smaller coil. The larger coil seems huge and heavy to me, but I vision it as being good for the beach, or in fields and other open areas. My initial impression of the 5" coil is VERY GOOD. I like it. Naturally, because of size, one can't cover as much ground with it, but I believe by going slow and covering the ground I do cover, this coil will serve me well. It finds the target, then you zero in on it. Very very easy. I think I will install the larger coil tomorrow morning just to give it a go. The smaller coil keeps the Racer almost at stock weight, which seems very light to me already.

The Racer also has 7 adjustment holes for sizing. I am a short man, so this helps a lot. I guess tall people have the opposite problem. But with the Racer, this is not a problem.

Value?: You know, I don't rightly know. I was torn between several MDs, but one morning I just threw my hands in the air and said, "I'm going with the Racer". Especially after talking with Michael, a product specialist at metal detectors . com . I know their job is to sell MDs, but I believe he was forthright in all he told me, while never never putting down another MD. Almost like talking to a friend. At $588.00 shipped to my door, including the 5" round coil, I think I did all right. Especially since I have now broke it in. I have to say what Monte had to say bout the Makro Racer was convincing, and I thank you Monte. A very complete review from a very experienced man who loves metal detecting.

My apologies if I went on too long with this post. As I said, I am very new to MD, and to this wonderful forum. Just trying to learn a little about what I believe to be a great new hobby in my retirement years. I see it as being fun, engaging, and perhaps get a little exercise.

Regards to all.

Congratulations on the new Racer Terry. Your post is positive and informational. There is no fountain of youth, but a shiny new metal detector sure comes close. Good luck and happy hunting.

Thank you Roland. As most of us do, I like sharing.

You're probably correct about the coil bolt not holding up. The original bolts were hollow and have a tendency to break. If you break it before you get an extra, you can always use one of the arm cuff bolts. The arm cuff bolt is not hollow so it's stronger than the coil bolt. Good luck with your new Racer. I think you'll be very happy with it.

Congratulations on your new detector. im sure youll have a great time with it.
As far as the display size. I think people that said it is large meant the numeric display. The numbers are a satisfactory size for most I believe.
Also I dont think youll have any trouble with the coil bolts. Ive used several different models of Nok/Mak detectors all the way back to owning and operating the Nokta velox one and golden sense. I strickly detect for gold in rough, rocky, brushy, unlevel terrain always and ive never broken a coil bolt that they made. In perspective when I ran fisher detectors for years I broke or lost the nut right off the bolt several times. Or most bolts that I owned from fisher were atleast bent. Also I wear out coil skid plates very fast, usually one every 30-40 days while gliding my coil over sharp quartz and pocket rock from pocket gold deposits. So I can say also the Nok/Mak coil covers nowdays are very well built aswell.
Ive never ran the original Racer, but I do run the newer Racer 2 nowdays. I now run a R26 solid 10x5 eliptical coil on it. Which I believe is from the original Racer. So if you like a inbetween size coil that is solid that dont get hung up on sticks and rocks then you might consider one. I can find gold as small as the tip of a ball point pen with that coil all the way up to larger targets just as good as the stock 11x7 coil.
Also usually they give you a couple spare coil bolts in the box, im surprised there wasnt some. If you need a quick replacement you can pick up similar nylon bolts at ace hardware. If you cant find any, I can send you some spares, I have about a dozen for they never break on me.
Good luck

certain you will come to appreciate the Racer more-and-more. As with any metal detector we can learn more about them the more we use them, and what I like about all the Makro and Nokta products I use, I always seem to find more positive things that impress me than I do negative things than annoy me. I can assure you that through the years there have been several detectors I have used, or have owned ... briefly ... that grew more frustrating the more I turned them on. The Racer series, all of them, started out pretty impressive and continue to please.

I found the display of 'ample' size, and the primary need is to see the numeric VDI read-out. I have handled quite a few models with a larger-size housing or display atop the rod and the result is a top-heavy feel and poor balance.

As Tom mentioned, if it is the hollow bolt and the bolt had and nut are matching in appearance, then Yes, you could get a broken coil bolt. If you have the Nokta style coil bolt, with a 'lever-type' bolt head, you should be fine.

Which search coil were you using?

Did you use all four search modes to work at learning it, or only the two primary-use Discriminate modes, which are 2-Tone and 3-Tone?

Did you only use the default settings? If not, what were the settings you used in each search mode?

Ground Balance is so simple. You said you used all three modes and there are four, so which one didn't you use?

I usually rely on a 2-Tone mode when hunting wide-open areas, such as a large park or sports field, a beach, a plowed area, if the target count is low-to-moderate and fairly well spaced. In all Coin Hunting and Relic Hunting sites with a lot of trash in close proximity, especially a bunch of ferrous junk, then I prefer 3-Tone most of the time.

Pinpointing is very easy, especially with the smaller-size search coils. As for helping to isolate a located target, I rely on either my Makro or Nokta Pointer.

Yes, the stock coil is their 7X11 DD. They do make a round-shaped DD, the RC13E, which they label 5", but it measures about 5½" and that is what I call it.

The RC13 was introduced as a 4.7X5.2, and that slightly 'Out-Of-Round' coil is the one I called the 'OOR' coil. I started using 'OOR' to describe the slightly 'Out-Of-Round' 8X9 coil Tesoro brought out in 2001, but 'OOR' has really caught on within the Makro Racer series and Nokta FORS series to refer to that coil. I use both it and the round 5½" DD coils on my Racer 2, more often the 'OOR' because I have a 5½' round shaped coil on my Relic and Gold Racer.

Both of the smaller size coil provide exceptional performance in confined and/or trashy sites and, combined with the detector' excellent circuitry, you can get some very impressive detection depths for such small coils.

I only use a 7X11 DD in more open areas, such as a beach as you suggested, unless I am working in a very littered 'party' area or near a beach fire pit, etc.

Very comfortable adjustment ability to have a 'proper' rod length, which is usually having the edge of the coil about 12"-18" in front of your leading toe. Then just use a slow and methodical, comfortable sweep and pause to recover the many found targets.

Dollar-for-dollar it is an unbeatable, or even unmatchable, value on the market.

Going too long? I don't think you did, but in future posts it is often helpful to know the coil you used, the search mode, and settings when describing a detecting adventure you're enjoyed.

Glad you're now enjoying one of the greatest outdoor activities, yet I feel sorry you have missed out on so much and got a start later in life. I'm only about two years younger, but I'll conclude my 52nd year of detecting in two months and start on fifty-three. Enjoy all the health you have and get out often,. Also glad to hear your wife is taking to using your former model to join the fun. I wasn't that lucky.

Monte

Hey man, thanks for the hardware offer. I'll pass, as I now think I will be okay, after what you said. Also, as Tom said, can always remove one off the handle. Probably getting ahead of myself anyway. Thanks for the recommendation of the coil. Finding goal sure sounds exciting.

Monte, you are amazing. No bull crap either. I am going to try and address what you said as best I can:

1. Display of ample size. I now agree. It dawned on me real quick that the numeric VDI read-out is the most important visual to see, and it's plenty big.

2. Bolt and screw: I believe it to be the solid improved bolt and screw. That's good news, from you and others.

3. Coil: The small DD, 4.5"x5". I liked this coil for searching around my fishing docks, where it's dry. Also want to check out around some hundred year old trees on my property.
I am looking forward to trying out the larger coil today, but I believe the smaller coil will prove to be a blessing. I am not without health issues, back surgery last year, arthritis in both hands and really bad in fingers. Doctor tells me it is a disease, but I aggravated the condition from playing stringed instruments for so long. On doctors orders, I will not play anything for six months. If doesn't help greatly, surgery is the next option. If I ever want to play again without the pain being as bad. If you suffer from this, or anyone else, you know how difficult it is to wake up at 03:00 in the morning to wee wee, and you can't even grip or bend your fingers to help with the job at hand. (that's probably too much info.) In the month I've been MD now, I haven't noticed this giving me a problem. Maybe just the opposite.

4. Modes: I didn't try the beach mode. I used the default settings, but I also tinkered some with the settings. I ran Gain anywhere from 70 to 95. I can't remember details, as I was practicing, but I think I found the 95 to be to my liking.

I don't think I ever messed around with threshold. ID filter? Started at 10, which I think is default. The I started moving it up, and finished my hour work on around 50. On 50, the last hold I dug was a rather large screw, only about 3 inches under. I figured it would ID it out. I guess it is made out of iron, but maybe not.

Didn't do tracking, no freq shift. Did tinker with audion tone. Did vibration. Love the backlight, and flashlight.

5. Ground balance: Working on that today. Reading first.

6. Pin pointing: While the machine seems great for PP, I really love my Makro PP to finish job. Great tool for MD. With this MD purchase, I now have two, as one came with the Racer.
It now belongs to my wife.

Fifty two years of MD? That's wild. You know, that would make a good new thread to post, by someone, other than me. "How many years MD? Actual years."

Okay, time to do some chores and get ready to MD.

Blessings to all.

Congrats on your new Racer Terry. I'm sure you will be satisfied with it. I traded for the Racer 2 a few weeks back. Definitely satisfied with it.

Hello, I just wanted you men, Sataro, Monte, Tom, and Roland, to know that I returned the Macro Racer. However, you men were really great, and I thank you for your posts as I wobbled through these beginning moments in my MD career.

First off, let me say that, even with only a month of total experience under my belt, and only an ACE 200 to compare, there was no doubt that the Racer is a wonderful MD. Loved the pin pointing feature. Lights, you name it. Light years ahead of the Ace 200. So this is not a negative review of the Racer, just a reckoning.

Well why would you return such a wonderful MD? Men, it's more of a "personality" thing. The morning I called medtaldetector.com to order a Tesoro DeLeon, I overstated and overthought my beach use intentions and let myself be talked into the Racer. My bad, not the sales person. Even the day I tested it and had some success, something just didn't feel right. Couldn't get the Tesoro out of my mind.

Why? What about the personality thing? I am an old school type of man, simplistic is good. I like pitching horseshoes and fishing on a river bank, walking fields looking for arrowheads, walking when golfing. I like Beenie Weenies and potted meat. Spam and sardines too. I envision the Tesoro having this personality.

#1: Life Time Warranty. That was huge to me. Two years most others, LTW Tesoro. At plus 70 years old, marginal health, perhaps another 10 years to hunt at best, this will most likely be the last MD I will purchase.

I can't overstate how great metaldetector.com was in helping me with this self-inflicted issue. Bill Ladd and Daniel went out of their way to deal fairly with me. Even though I had unboxed and used the Racer for around an hour, they did an even swap with me, allowing me to retain the Makro PP and included ear phones at no extra cost. I couldn't see him of course, but I bet Bill was shaking his head at my exchange, as he is a real believer in the Racer, with many videos to prove it.

So men, I wanted to share this with you, probably just to make me feel better. I guess I'm also a "touchy feely" type of guy.

Everyone has different tastes, that's why there are so many popular detectors. If there was one perfect detector, I'd have it instead of the eight or ten I usually have. Good luck with the Deleon. Tesoro makes fine detectors and the lifetime warranty can't be beat.

I've had my Racer 2 sitting in a box for about a week. Just unpacked and assembled it today... I'm heading out to the backyard to build a test bed right now. I'll be testing the Racer 2 against my Deus and Whites MXT Pro... I'm interested in the results I might get...
