New school prayer

Goes4ever

New member
Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offence; it's a freedom scene.
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.

For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.

We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks.
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the 'unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's 'inappropriate' to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such 'judgments' do not belong.
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
Amen !

Terry, I like that post. Thanks. I work in the school system, and sadly that is the way it is. When I was in elementary school, the Gideons use to actually come and hand out New Testaments to us every year. We actually could pray in school and not get in trouble.

That's a good one Terry! I've seen it, or one like it before. I think I'll print this one to keep. Like Doug, I remember when I was in elementary school, how the Gideons would come around and hand out New Testaments. I think I still have one of those somewhere... they were red. So far I've been blessed to teach in school systems where we have a little more freedom when it comes to God. Maybe that's because I live here in Alabama, right in the middle of the Bible Belt. As teachers, we aren't supposed to initiate student prayer (but we can and do get away with it... so far). We are cautioned to be careful to not impose our religious beliefs on students. Of course there are plenty of exceptions to the rule but for the most part, the majority of students here are brought up in church (doesn't mean they are Christians) and are used to hearing about God/prayer/etc. We do have students who claim to be something other than Christians too. Most, but NOT all, of the schools right around here still do a morning devotion - the reading of a Bible verse(s) over the intercom system. The verse is chosen and read by the student Chaplin. This is followed by a moment of silence (they understand that this is a time for prayer if they choose to pray), and the Pledge. When I was in school, after the devotion we had to say the Lord's Prayer. Teachers are allowed to keep a Bible on the desk and/or hang religious things on the wall behind the desk. We still have a student led prayer (usually by the student Chaplin) before each football game too. I know this isn't the case all across the United States and I'm thankful to live right where I am. Even though we aren't supposed to initiate prayer or impose our beliefs on students, many of us will often get conversations started that we KNOW will turn in the direction of God! Just keep asking questions and the conversation will eventually end up right where we want it! I figure that this MIGHT be the only time SOME of those students get to hear about God if they happen to be from a family that does not claim to be Christian, go to church, etc.

Now, I just need to find another teaching position!!! I sooooo want to be back in the classroom. So many teachers here are being cut due to the economy but I know my God is able to make a way for me if it's in His will for me to be teaching next fall. I'd appreciate prayers for me to find another position.

That is cool you still get to do that. I live on the border of two counties in ky and one still has church functions at school and one rarely makes mention of GOD at school. Sad isn't it GOD is being forsaken everywhere.

There's a commercial on TV that says Johnny couldn't have a Bible in school but in prison he has one now! Shows a young man reading the Bible! So true, but they need it before they grow up and get into trouble, even though learning about Jesus then is better than never!

I've read the poem before also, especially when they had that terrible shooting in the school and killed many including a Christian student! She was really on fire for the Lord, so satan got rid of her quick, but her writings and etc. have been on the Net and around the world! Therefore, satan may have killed her but not God's Holy Word that kept her in tune with Him! May the families of all students be at peace and know God is still Almighty and only allows satan to do his dirty works through others who don't worship HIs Son, Jesus, and His truth! We, Christains, are His hands and feet now on earth while He reigns in heaven until His return to catch us up unto Him, to forever be with our Lord! Amen!

God Bless! Betty
