New School vs. Old School

If you could select just one machine from the following two categories, would you go new school and choose either the Vaquero or the Outlaw or old school and choose either the Bandido II uMAX or the Eldorado uMAX? Your single best choice of an all around general purpose machine would be the ____?____.

Hi,

That's an interesting topic, but there is a debate within your debate.

Some people might think the new Outlaw is more old-school. Maybe a Bandido II uMax with tweeked performance, the H.O.T. detectors are more the new-school.

Anyway, I'll sit back and watch what the masses say.

Good topic !!!

Yeah, CWRelichunter, I would put the Outlaw in the old school (as a style of detector) with the Bandido II Umax and the Eldorado (Umax). As to which I would prefer...because I have the Eldorado, and have used the Outlaw (and I also have a Cibola) I lean towards old school. I have found the Cibola to be a great little machine, but my favourite is my Eldorado, and I base this only upon my experience of using both. A plus for the Eldorado is that the battery lasts a lot longer than in the Cibola, but this is not the main reason I prefer the Eldorado. As I said, it is just my personal preference...I'm not saying one is better than the other, as I dont think I have the qualifications to say that. HH

I should add, that we are fortunate that we now have a choice of "new school" or "old school", new. I am thinking specifically of U max detectors which have manual ground balance, i.e. Vaquero and Outlaw. HH

The only choice I haven't had any hands on experience with is the Outlaw. As to picking only one, I don't think a person would go wrong with any of them, but choosing might come down to a good buy on a clean used Eldorado versus a (New price) Vaquero or considering the Outlaw with the 3 coil option. Any of them should give enough performance to satisfy most relic hunters, coin shooter etc. and for the most part the performance would be similar enough IMHO that none greatly outshines the others. In my own case, I'd lean to the Eldo, Outlaw or Bandido II simply because I have a very complete selection of umax coils useful on any of that three.

The Eldorado, if I wanted to have full-service performance as it is the only model listed that has a 'true' ED-180 or 'Zero-Disc.' adjustment setting. That would allow me to hunt even the more challenging bad-ground sites in the motion Disc. mode and still get a response from ALL targets, ferrous and non-ferrous. It is the most versatile of those offered and I enjoyed the Eldorado's I have owned.

However, most people do not want to hear of dig all targets, especially iron, and prefer to use ample Discrimination to knock out the typical ferrous junk. So, for most folks, and since I have one in my current detector arsenal, I have to consider a great pick to be the Bandido II
