New Sovereign GT Video

Is exaggerating the capabilities of a detector by a company acceptable? People can make that judgment for themselves but there was more than exaggeration with that test. He works for Minelab and he also tests and writes field reports. The test he did had nothing to do with the iron mask switch. The iron mask switch didn't make the coin disappear, changing the angle of his sweep made it disappear. It would have disappeared regardless of the position of the iron mask switch. If that type of test was really valid and you didn't use any tricks like changing the sweep direction that test would do just the opposite and show that the iron mask switch does nothing more than the basic discrimination function on every detector out there.

Thanks for the reality check!

Steve

I did what was done on the video , and ceme up with different results ......A lot of you guys just took the video as gospel and that was that ..... I like to see for myself if what I'm seeing is really what happens ......When I saw that my machine didn't do the same thing no matter what I did , and it only did that in another direction of sweep , I mentioned it right away ....It leaves me wondeiring how many people really check these things out for themselves ..... I was wondering if maybe I had a broken machine or better yet , if my Sovereign had magical powers since I could hear the coin by sweeping at one angle , but not at the other angle ...... Crazyman was the only person who came to my defense and assured me tha tthere was nothing wrong or magical about my machine .... As Crazyman said , Iron Mask ON is NOT going to make THAT MUCH of a difference ......Some ? MAYBE , but surely not what was shown in the video ...... For crying out loud , try it for yourself and see what happens ....It's not like we don't have coins and nails around our homes !!....... See for yourself !!.....Jim

Minelab has been hyping the capabilities of the iron mask since they came out and why they or one of their representatives would use this test to try and prove it is beyond me as this type of test will do just the opposite if you don't do the slight of hand/coil or camera trick. The iron mask switch although separated from the regular discrimination function on the detector is still nothing more than discrimination. Turning iron mask on is basically the same as lowering your discrimination on most detectors to partially accept or increase the sensitivity to certain size iron which in certain circumstances depending on the orientation and size of the iron might help when a ferrous and non ferrous target are close to each other. To give you an idea of how it works and this is only an example and can be done with the GT and every other detector out there. If you take a pull tab and discriminate it out completely and put it 2-3 inches above a dime the pull tab will mask the coin and you won't get a signal or response on the dime. If you take the same pull tab and set your discrimination to partially accept the tab to where it just clicks or pops and put it back over the nail you will now get a response on the dime. There is nothing magical about this and it's not exclusive to Minelabs.

Synthnut,
Much thanks to you and Crazyman for this. I will test it for myself today, I finally have the time.

Best Reagrs,
Steve

I haven't watched the video yet, but will have to look at it, but in air test it is hard to make it the same as in the Field when actually hunting. I have seen in air test or freshly buried coins I don't get the depth or the signals I can on actually targets in the ground.I also seen some coins that have had rusty bolt on top of them,, but put that same bolt on top of the coin out of the ground and all I get is a null of the bolt. One one of my targets at a old farm yard as I run iron mask on on the GT all the time as I want the advantage of getting coins close to iron. I got one signal i knew there was a nail or something iron in it and felt there maybe a coin close to it as I could get the little high tone in one direction which can be a false off the nail too. I went around it and felt it could be good so I turned off the iron mask and only got a null and no signal of a coin so I went back to iron mask on and dug the target i was hearing. Being it was deeper I dug a plug and used my S-1 in all metal and found that to one side of my plug was a bigger nail and down about another 3 inches found a barber dime and yet another signal with a smaller nail just to one side of the dime. This tells me the iron mask does work on actual targets, but not so good when the nail and coin are out of the ground which get me back to what Minelab says plus those of us that have used them for years and that is they don't do well in air test and freshly buried targets. I would like to see more test in the Field on actual targets done and report them as this is the type of hunting I do of coins and jewelry and artifacts that been lost years ago as I found freshly buried coins is not as exciting as the older deep ones others have missed as the Sovereign can do it better for me.

I have been hoping that Des Dunne would reply to some of these post.

Yes I would like to read an explanation from the source too.

Rick, I've never said that iron mask wouldn't be beneficial in some cases but I've haven't seen it work any better or different than most detectors that let you control the lower range of discrimination. Everything you said I agree with and I also personally think that air tests and tests on freshly targets only does two things, it either gives you a false sense of security on what your detector will do or a false sense of security on what your detector can't do. As far as Iron mask, we were debating what iron mask could or could not do in an earlier thread. That thread was on it's last leg when Des posted his video with his iron mask test. I've been detecting for some years and saw right off the bat watching the video that what Des was presenting was not accurate and bordered on .........well, lets just say it concerned me. I actually tried to keep my opinion to this test to private mail with folks that asked but more questions were asked and more comments were made about it and I got caught up in it in the open forum more than I wanted. The only thing I will add is that when I buy something with my hard earned money I don't want the salesman to exaggerate the product to get a sale. If a car salesman says the car will get 45 mpg and I base my decision to buy on that and only get 30 I'm not going to be happy with that exaggeration..

The Sovereign is a GREAT machine in it's own right and can stand on it's own merrits just fine !!..... I have and E Trac and could EASILY get along just fine with that alone ....BUT , that Sovereign kept nagging at me .....I kept hearing how good it was , and it was not that expensive , so I had to have one ....I"m so glad that I bought one .....I love the Sovereign and I love my E Trac too ....Neither machine is going anywhere ...They will BOTH stay in my arsenal .... The Sovereign does NOT need any smoke and mirrors to sell it .....All someone has to do is spend one day getting use to it and they are not going to sell it if they see what it can REALLY do ...... You're not going to get a better machine for anywhere near the price of this machine ....and it surely is better than many macines that are twice it's price ..... I want to also take the time to applogize to Crazyman for bringing him into this topic ..... I know he was biting his tongue , and really did not want to get involved .... but the honorable guy that he is , he jumped in anyway knowing ti was the right thing to do .... None of us are know it alls, but we have a great forum here , and we all strive to help each other , and support each other as best we can ....That's what makes this forum so great .....Everyone contributes what they can , and we all grow from it ..... Sometimse we don't see things the same way, but we are big enough t\o agree to disagree ...... I've not only learned more about detecting from others , but have learned what a bunch of stand up guys are on this forum that wil take the time to help in whatever way they can ..... Let's keep it real guys !!..... and if you know something, or learn something , pass it on to the next guy !!.......Jim

Yes,

Why hasn't Des addressed this bit of controversy?

Jim, there is no reason for you to apologize. I brought myself into it by responding when people couldn't understand how he made the coin disappear. This whole thread was bothersome to me because I have nothing against Des so the problem for me was, how do I impune the test itself and not try to impune Des's reputation at the same time. Personally I had never seen a more misleading test especially by someone that knows better so it was just to hard not to say something.

Sorry, your post about your mineralization question was lost in this discussion. Sometimes in long threads you need to reply to the individual post itself as opposed to the whole thread. It's my wife's birthday so I'm headed out the door shortly. I'll send you a private message later today about some tips for bad ground.
