New tesoro compadre/detectorist.

Hi guys, Hope all is well. I'm Matt, I live in Columbia, SC. I just just got my first detector last night. My girlfriend got it for me for my birthday....she rocks!
So I went out into the back yard this morning to give it a try, and made my first ever find, I think it is aluminum. It's not much but it's a beginning.
While digging that hole it started to rain, so my digging had been put on hold for another time. I'll keep in-touch with future finds and concerns.

Be good or good at it!

Welcome to the forum. Glad you got the Compadre. Your girlfriend made a wise choice. How did she know to get the Compadre? Do you have the 5" or 8" coil? Becareful this is an addicting hobby.

Practice your pin pointing and learn how to cut a U-shaped plug. Any dirt you remove from the hole place on a drop cloth so that you can just drop all the dirt back in the hole and leave no sign you were there. Stomp the plug down really well when done and ruff up the grass with your hand. If you do this it is almost impossible to tell where you dug. Practice at home in your yard first. Once you get good at pin pointing your plugs should only be about 3" across. For shallow clad learn how to pop the coin out of the ground with a screwdriver or gasket scraper. You can google this and see You Tube vids.

The Compadre loves gold and coins. You might want to open up a savings account to deposit all that newly found cash into!

I had both the 5" and 8" on my Amazon wish list and she chose the 8". Good idea on the drop cloth, I was thing a piece of cardboard or shoe box to put dirt back in.

You have a smart girl there. The compadre is a blast to use. Take your time with it. Go slow. It will talk to you. Once you learn what it is telling you, You will know trash from treasure. Have fun... KEN
 
But what will she do when you start spending more time detecting than with her . that will be the real test , keep digging good finds will come , but it is just fun to find things to I know that I have fun just digging nails and practicing pinpointing them and judging depth.
 
welcome, though i have never used a compadre, i got the vaquero. i understand they are good. especially getting close to metal fences, polls, etc. just use it and like the other models, you will soon get pretty good with the sound and disc knob to tell what is down there.
 
She made a good choice choosing the 8". Typical woman thinking though- Bigger is better!
 
Yes Welcome, and good luck. :thumbup: Keep the detector and for sure the girlfriend Lol. :clapping: As mentioned already learn to dig correctly and fill your holes. Respect the Hobby and it will be good to you, post your finds and have fun.
