Very nice, thanks! I know other people have told me to get a pinpointer, but if i get one I want to get a quality one that will not break on me. The problem is that i do not have the finances right now to buy a garretts for 130. I figured that i would dig, wave the detector over hole to determine if target is in the hole or in plug, and then search. I know it will take longer, but its the best i can do right now unless anyone has another suggestion... :/
That's what I have been doing for 25 years or so, I can't see paying a hundred plus dollars for just another thing that I have to carry around when I can do the same thing with my detector. I honestly don't think that I would use a pinpointer if someone was to give me one, I am so used to doing it without one.

I hear ya. I had to save up for a while before I got my Garrett. Before that I would take handfulls of dirt and wave it over the top of the coil to narrow down lumps and then over the top of the hole as a final touch. Once you have it in a holster, on your side, carrying it around is not a problem. It sure is nice to poke it around when you are down on your knees. But hey, like SkiWhiz says - they are lots of guys that don't bother so do what works for you.

Good luck and happy hunting man.

Cool deal. I have some earbuds with volume control, but just need to get a headphone jack.

You will need a stereo 1/4"male to 1/8"stereo female adapter. You may find that the earbud cord is not long enough to set the detector down without pulling the buds from you ears. You can use a 1/8"stereo extension cord to give your bud cord more length. Both items are at radio shack.Remember, tesoro uses a stereo jack plug in there detectors. This is good to know while selecting adapters and headphones. :-D

More on pinpointers - as mentioned above you can get along without one. I did for several years. However, after using them, I won't hunt without one unless it's forgotten or broke. They speed up recovery enough that I'm convinced, especially for small targets that have taken the same color as the soil. I do feel it's worth your time and $ to buy a good quality one when you get to it. You won't be needing more than one, so a bit more expense one time isn't so bad. I put a lanyard on mine that connects to my belt so that I won't leave it behind or drop it and lose it while in the field. Same advice on headphones - any are better than none, but when your budget allows, buy a good quality set that will serve well and last a long time. Works for me.

Like BarberBill said, HEADPHONES. Even if they are a Walmart 1/4 to 1/8 adapter and cheap headpones or ear buds. Without them you will attract lots of attention and have people bothering you. Also don't forget to bring a drop cloth with to put the soil on. That way when you fill the hole you can just pick up the cloth and dump the dirt in hole, flip the plug down, stomp on it, and no sign of digging will be left behind. This is very important to do in public parks etc.

Thanks again. I want to get out and hunt so bad, but my tesoro, which was to be here by friday, has been rescheduled to monday. I will definitely use some of these tips.

Instead of a drop cloth, I use a frisbee to put the dirt on. Works great!

Good idea Matt, that way if the dogs or kids get in the way of you swinging the coil you can toss the frisbee and they will run after it, it will give you some time to detect until they return :poke::rofl:. Just kidding about the kids, I know they are curious what we are doing and what we are finding.

Haha! Truth be told, me and my son have played with the frisbee almost as much as I've used it for metal detecting!
