New to Detecting (and, E-Trac)

DetectorPhil

New member
My first detector is on its way, and it's a used E-Trac. I'm looking for advice on how to use it, advice specific for someone completely new to metal detecting. It also includes a 6x8 SEF coil.

So, how should I start? Initially I'll want to turn it on and immediately use it around my home and garden with the hope that it'll all somehow make sense. Then, maybe parks/forests, the beach sometime in the next month, and I'm not sure where else. I hear the soil is iron rich here in Oregon.

All advice is welcome and appreciated. Thanks! My plan is to join a local club and buy the E-Trac+Explorer book.

What part of Oregon ? The best way to learn is by using it ! Also this forum has a grat deal of Info along with watching youtube video's will give lots of info as well. Welcome aboard the E-Trac detecting.

Get some coins together some jewelry and a place with low interference.
Do some basic air tests, get familiar with the sounds.
