New to detecting with a couple questions. More like a couple dozen

Hello fellow Detectees, I purchased a Minelab Quattro several years ago with the dream of retiring and wandering over the family farm and digging up all of the lost treasures. The farm consists of 250 acres with two existing homes from 1834 and 1841. There are also two locations where homes once stood and the home I live in is a log cabin from 1835. Really excited about finally getting out there after six years of getting all of my to do list wiped out. Took the Quattro out in the back yard 2 days ago and located 37 coins 11 rings and lots of metal. After that 3 minute search I turned around, walked the 10 feet back to the house, and told my wife I might need to do a little research or talk to someone who can tell me if I live on an 1800s junk yard or better yet how to run the Quattro. The other night I was going thru the post trying to find what coil and pin pointer to buy and also what mode to search with, and possible settings to use for the best results. While looking at the different coils most people use I said out loud "Most guys like double D's" The wife looked at me and said That's all men think about and went back to reading her book. So I don't think she is going to be able to help much... So any thoughts on settings, pin pointer, best coil to use, or any thoughts on how to help the new guy on the block. Thanks

Sounds to me like all you need is a good shovel.

Those metal detector manuals really should say to dig up the targets you sweep over.

Just thought with that many targets in a ten foot diameter I better ask for some direction on a mode to search in or a setting before I make my yard look like downtown Bagdad

I'm not sure if you meant 3 hours instead of "3 minutes" of detecting? 11 rings in even 3 hours of detecting is an incredible amount!!! In one of Andy Sabich's books, under cache hunting, he mentioned about all the possible places, cache's are to be found. In those day's (1800's) so many people hid valuables, including coins etc; in various places on their properties i.e. chicken coops, under fence posts, root cellars, under the steps at the rear of homes, under a tree and the list of potential spots goes on. Loose coins and rings can be found near where a laundry line is/used to be and again, he identifies other possible locations in his books.
Education is a key with this hobby and I think your right on track for success because of your willingness to learn. Rather than repeat info; I would suggest reading the past posts on this Forum because there is a goldmine of info; on various settings for the location you want to detect and suggestions on pin pointers etc;. I think we all would love to see some pic's of those rings and coins and the other things you've found so far!! Good luck and happy hunting!

The reference to all I located was my attempt at a reference at how lost I was. Turned The detector on walked three feet and the Quattro sounded like a warm up session at a grade school band concert. Tried to see if I was doing something wrong so I changed to coin mode and it did change, every body except the the flutes clarinets and an occasional oboe. I'm not going to get frustrated and give up and I know there is a huge amount of trial and error. Have been trying to find a copy of Andy's book with no success. Have been staying up late reading the post and went to post from years ago where the Quattro posts seem to be more frequent. Really excited but need to learn and practice. Thanks for the reply
