PastorBob -- do a factory reset -- With machine off hold the Ground Balance and the Menu button down at the same time, then turn the machine back on while continuing to hold these two buttons down -- do this until you get an 88 reading on the VID. Now try your test again. I was having a problem with Notching and it getting in the way and one of the members gave me this advice and it straightened everything out. My guess it that this machine has a memory set so you do not lose your previous search setting from a previous hunt. I think that after a lot of changing settings and trying different things may some how get mixed in with the memory feature and because of this the machine should be reset to factory settings occasionally and from there you can start playing around with the settings. To turn the notching off you have to go to Notching and reduce it to a setting of 1 press menu and then you have it set as low as it will go, in effect, turning it off. It can cause problems with other settings if you leave it in the background with a higher setting, which I did but a member here got me on the right path -- reset should give you that quarter reading at 5" easy, even deeper but 5" -- no problem. I know this is a late comment and you may have already figured it out maybe you could let us know how you ended up.
