Hello all... I'm new to the Forum and to detecting and am excited to get started. What recommendations do you have as far as type of detector for a novice? Thanks.

The Compadre appears to be well liked by many, very simple turn on and go, hits well on jewelry and silver, and(BIG AND) its only about $160.

If you have a bigger budget, the Outlaw is an excellent deal because of the range of coils that accompany the detector.

Regardless, you should try to get an electronic pinpointer when or shortly after you buy a metal detector - it removes so much frustration that a lot of people refuse to hunt without one.

Hi atanner.Can you tell us were you live?.This may effect the type of detector to get you started with.Getting started with a Tesoro will be great for you.The silver umax is great for a beginner and experts still love to use it because it can find what a $1000.00 detector can.Being new to the game,read as much as you can,and ask a bunch of questions.We need to find out about the soil conditions of the area you live.This will determine if you need a first detector with ground balance or a preset gb.Hang out and talk some.There are some great detectorist here that would like to help you.You can't go wrong with a Tesoro. :-D

Welcome to the forum. You can't go wrong with any of the Tesoro detectors. How much money do you want spend? Keep in mind, you'll need a Garrett Pro Pointer ($125) and Lesche digger ($35) to make detecting a lot more enjoyable.

Does anyone know what the ground minerialization is like in Kentucky?.I live on the east coast of South Carolina and we have no minerialized soil here.So a preset ground balance works good for me.Maybe someone that is familiar with this area will tell us.Anyway this is a good start to find out the dirt conditions.Stay tuned. O

In relation to the pinpointers that several people are recommending to atanner. Been detecting for about 7 years now, and I really don't have any problem pin pointing with my Vaq and Silver.
Respectfully asking, am I missing something? Can't recall one time over the past years where I really would have needed it.

Yeah, the boat if you don't get one? It's about recovery speed, not pinpointing. I've watched a lot of videos of guys detecting without a pin-pointer. It just about drives me crazy watching them wasting their time waving pieces of dirt in their hand in front of the coil looking for the target. Get a Garrett ProPointer, use it and you will see that it's worth every dollar and then some. I'm not going to detect without one. Period.

We did not have pinpointers in the 70's and 80's.But i finally got one.A detector pro pistol probe.And i love it.I like the awesome depth of a pulse induction pointer.It's like having another detector on your side.I can hit a quarter 6" with this pointer.Garret is not the only pointer.I would like to try the vibaprobe.Silent pinpointing! :O
