Hi, I have a fisher 1265, but have just taken delivery of a goldscan PI which I hope to use on the beach.
A few detectorists have told me I would be better off trading them both in for a minelab sovereign xs2.
What do you recommend as the ones in the know about the goldscan ?
Any info greatly appreciated,

The Goldscan Pi should have no problems out performing the Sovereign. One must remember the Goldscan has no discrimination, it
 
I think you have two pretty good units and if I were you I would quit listening to so much advice, get out the operating manuals study them until you understand the function of each of the machines controls and then use them. All detectors can be adjusted to the ground conditions even tho some will be more severe then others, but there have been many great finds made with the 1265 and believe me many more will be by competent operators who understand how to use the detector and KNOW WHERE to look....Experience is the best teacher and you gain that by putting the detectors to work, and listening...Geo . <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
 
beach, the best thing is to go over it with the 1265 and dig up everything you can. Then go over it with the Goldscan and you will find the deeper things that the 1265 didn`t find. Expect to find little things like split shot sinkers, fishhooks, and hairpins with the Goldscan, but you won't miss any gold mixed in with them either. The Goldscan and Beachscans love gold. This will also work on a smaller saltwater beach but the bigger beaches may take quite a bit of time, unless you do it in sections. Or you can just use the Goldscan and spend lots of time digging every target, you won't cover an area very fast but you will do it the maximum recovery way. Wear something to throw the trash into, and use a good scoop that you can put your foot behind with out crushing, enjoy yourself and take your time, and the good finds will come. John

If you want to find change ($) go with the Sov. If you want to find gold stay with the Goldscan.
Friend of mine has an Excalibur (Sov. in waterproof box) and a 15" WOT coil. With my Beachscan I can hit a gold wedding band at more than twice the depth he can. He can hit quarters at twice the depth I can. I will take the gold and leave the quarters for him.
After running over and area with the Goldscan you will not feel as if you missed any targets.

Been out with the goldscan today on the beach, but found I couldn't recover the targets as the mud walls were caving in as quick as I could dig! I used a long handle spade.

type scoop with a strong bottom to use your feet to push in the sand with, and has a long handle. The kind with the wire mesh back section sift faster but they usually aren't as strong as the ones with the holes drilled in them. There are some wire mesh type that have a reinforced strap welded to the back where your foot pushes and these usually will be ok. Spades don't work good at all in sand or mud as you now know. Make your life easier with a decent beach scoop. Good huntin, John
