Received the Vaquero from Razerback today as part of a trade for my GTI 2500. I didn't get to take it out to the field yet but I did play around with ground balance in my backyard and did some air tests. It looks like this thing is going to kill me with all the deep digging I'm going to be doing in the near future. I'm really impressed with the weight of this unit as well. I can't wait to take it out this weekend. I've always used metered machines so that might take some getting used to, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it before too long!

I just got mine last Friday. I make progress every day, it seems. My biggest hurdle has been accepting the fact that I will be able to hear what a coin sounds like when I have the disc set just above iron. The sounds are overwhelming at first! It takes a bit of faith and determination before Experience kicks in and gives confidence.

The best thing to happen to me happened this morning before work: I was out in my yard attempting to Power-Balance the Vaq. I got it set where I think I needed it and started sweeping the front yard with the disc set on Nickel. I hit what seemed to be a nice tone. It wasn't the blare of a surface penny, just a nice distant, solid signal. I dug it and flipped a "token" out of the hole, except I saw the words "quarter-dollar" through the dirt. OMG. She's a Barber quarter, 1906!!

I've got her carefully washed in distilled water and in a 2 by 2, but I'm still high from the experience! My house was built in the 50s, but my neighbor's house dates to 1908... so it makes sense that this baby was there.

After that, I immediately set the disc to Iron and started, not sweeping, but "scrubbing" the ground with the search coil! I really felt "in tune" with the unit, it just took some kind of "proof" that there are prizes down there, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 inches. I immediately turned into a "dig it all" type guy. It just take the memory of that deep coin sound to light the fire....

did you take it out this weekend if so how did it go

I took it out last weekend, using the 10X12 coil...This beast is deep! I think I figured out how to effectively pinpoint, but I still need to work on the different sound variations. All in all I'm pleased, I think once I get the hang of it, I'll stop missing the display, but I've hunted for years with a display so it will be a new experience for land hunting without one. I think I need to get a good set of headphones though, or at least a set with volume control.

Joe, I feel like you and I are members of the same freshman class in Vaquero High.

I was using a cheap pair of phones with my Compadre, but I just bought a halfway decent set of Koss headphone. There is quite a bit more nuance. If you're using the disc, you can hear ghost whispers of what is being disced out. Pennies sound like quarters. I had to adjust a bit to the new sounds. The upshot is that I hear more information. I went over a zincoln again today that I chose not to dig the other day (I refuse to dig zincolns). I was torn about digging it 2 days ago because it seemed to come through on max disc, but I told myself that it was just laying in the perfect position for the signal to punch through the discrimination. With phones I realized that there was a decent clad sound in there, and it turned out to be a dime and a zincoln nestled together.
