Newbee ??s on settings

I just purchased a used Etrac. Appears to work just fine. I'm not new to MD but new to the Etrac. Question or questions would be should I reset to factory setting and learn from the ground up on the etrac or do you think I should use the previous users setting and change as I see fit to change from his settings.

It would appear there are 2 types of resets on this MD. True?

Also the lower shaft has the little wobble in it from side to side. Gotta be someone here that has addressed this issue and corrected it.

And finally any other tips would be appreciated. Has a Sunray X-1 and factory everything else.

Way thanks in advance

I got a little quick on the post with out doing some basic reading. I'm sure everybody makes changes to setting based on what conditions are at the time. I can figure this out so no need to respond to this part though.

Anybody have a solution to the wobble on coil and shaft though. Maybe just some good old black elec. tape on the shaft to make a snugger fit is the solution.

Thanks.

I adjusted the shaft length, marked it with a pencil, then used a single wrap of the good 3M 33+ electrical tape placed on the lower shaft at the point where the clamp grabs the lower shaft. It is a tight fit, so only a single wrap will work. It took out most of the wobble.

If you didn't get a factory book with your detector, you can download one from the Minelab site. Also, Andy Sabisch's The Minelab Explorer & E-Trac Handbook is a good reference to have.

F.Y.I.-- you are correct in that there are two resets. Master Reset (from the Preferences Menu) will wipe all the User Modes and User Discrimination patterns that were installed and reset everything to Factory defaults. The other reset (via the power button) only resets the Factory Modes and Universal Settings (Sensitivity, Noise Cancel and Threshold Pitch) back to defaults--it doesn't affect the User Modes and User Discrimination patterns.

I'm fairly new with the E-Trac also, but what probably helped me the most was practicing with a bunch of different targets (coins and trash) and listening to the new sounds/different sounds and watching the display. The Factory Coins Mode (with multi-tone Conductive sounds) is a good place to start. You can easily make adjustments to it as you gain experience.

Good luck on your next hunt!

3 settings I would work with for sure are the Variability, Tone Limits, and your Threshold Pitch. Get these where you like them and leave it. They are your "Standards" for which your ear will be trained. Also beware, that if you change to a different MODE. Some of the settings for Variability, Tone Limits will change the sound. It will throw you off.

See what works for you and have fun.

hey make sure the top shaft is in all the way and that its not upside down in the hole. trust me i can be done and it will wiggle when you use it. the coil should fit tight on the bottom shaft if it dont then make sure you have both the rubber grommets on the coil end of the lower shaft. the top shaft and lower shaft should fit together without any side to side play. if everything is loose and nothing is together wrong or missing parts id send it back with a note explaining whats wrong.

I'd like to add. Those sounds are for running in Conductive sounds only. If you run in Ferrous you'll have to play with the sounds all over again. Of course 2-Tone Ferrous doesn't need to be monkied with...ha!
