Hello All,

Haven't even gotten a detector yet,and learned so much from reading all the posts I can,but still have a question.I've seen alot of talk recently about PI detectors.What exactly is PI?I've been looking at getting a Fisher CZ-70 Pro.Does it have it?Do I need it?Any advantage or disadvantages?Thank You all for your time.

Hi Kirk,

A "PI" stands for pulse induction, which is a type of signal processing used to find targets. PI's respond to all metal targets regardless of discrimination. They do go deep and are not bothered by soil mineralization which is why they excel at salt water hunting. The drawback is they respond to all metals, junk included. With a PI, you will dig everything but most people do at the beaches cause it's easy digging.

The CZ-70 Pro is a VLF unit, using two discreet frequencies to get target responses. It has an excellent discrimination circuit which allows you to notch out unwanted targets like iron, unless you are looking for relics. I have used one for three years now and have had excellent results. It will also work on wet salt sand and the coil is waterproof. The control box is *NOT* waterproof but splash and rain resistant. It will find targets on beaches, land and playgrounds. I recovered a nickle a few days ago that was easily 8" inches down in wood chips. The "70" has a icon display to indicate what the target may be and a depth indication on pinpoint.

Depending on what you will use your machine for will determine what type you should get. The "70" is a great all around detector and with a lifetime warranty, it's hard to beat.

I will be in FL in Oct. for a week,so I wanted a model that does well in water,that's why I been looking at the 70.I really liked the idea of a chest pack since I am partially disabled and don't handle weights in front of me well.The Dr.'s say no more than 10 lbs.,I told them be reasonable,a case of longnecks weighs more than that :beers: LOL.Seriously,other than the FL week,I live near St. Louis,so I'll spend time along the Mississippi,as well as local lakes.Don't plan on diving with it,just wanna run the shoreline.I Don't mind having it detect all metals because I'm always griping at the kids to pick up after themselves,It looks better when I leave an area(we have sloppy campers here),and I'm a packrat anyway,who knows,what little part I find might be able to fix a bigger part of something else.You'd all be amazed at some of my contraptions!I plan on making this a slow,relaxing hobby,per Dr's request.Getting burnt out on RC stuff.Don't spend too much time in the shop anymore,tend to overdo it,bought my chiropractor a new Benz last month,what the hell,he likes it :D.Sorry I got so long winded on ya.

Handicapped ? Then you might want to check out the Tesoro line of detectors. I'm handicapped also and I have found that I just don't need the extra weight of a heavy detector.

I'm not slamming Fisher's either, they make awesome detector's. I own the Excel by Fisher, and it's light weight and easy to use. Great for the waters edge.
 
Got to thinking, The Excel won't be the best for salt water , but will work fine on the Mississippi river. It will perform best on dry land and fresh water. The Excell will also perform nicely on dry sand.

There would be some erratic behavior in salt water, however, it will still perform, just not all that well.

It sounds like you are expecting the beach to be alot of fun, and it can be, you just need to know where and when to hunt to be most effective. If you are, or were going to hunt the beach only there is no doubt that the 70 would be a much better bet.

Most likely my beach exposure will be 1-2 week a year till the last of the kids grow older,then the wife says we go to Panama Beach area.Breaking my heart !!!! Just figured a removable pack will definately help my back without the swinging weight,and since the 70 is at least moisture resistant,I could try the beach while I'm there.I looked at a few Tesoro's,I'm just a gadget nut,and liked the LCD screen on the 70.Of course,the screen won't make it any deeper or accurate,but the chrome on my truck don't make it any faster either,but I gotta have it!
