Newbie Questions

HI All, I am new to the MD Hobby, Started end of last year...Buddy of mine invited me to go with him and loaned me his extra MD, hooked right away! I just bought my Garrett Ace 250 last week....Love it so far! To date: 3 Mercury dimes, 2 Wheaties, 1 nice Buffalo nickel, and lots of new clad. The question that I have is....Can I hunt my local city and county parks....and school yards.....or do I need permission? Thanks in advance, and God Bless.

Depends on your local area. Check with Superintendant of Schools. Check with the local Parks and Recreation department for the city. County may or may not. Here the official word is no but if the rangers find you filling your holes and not causing a problem it's ok. The state of Michigan, I believe requires a permit and certain parks are of limits. Hope this helps.

We have rules at our state parks in iowa, beaches are ok, but certain times of the day are ok, example, sept thru may 4:30 am to 10:30 pm
But may 22nd to sept, 4:30 am to 11:00 am. are digging tool is limited in size. You can check on the internet! Most city parks ok, but it doesnt hurt to check.

OK, Thanks for replies....I live in Northern Michigan....Most state parks say OK...but items must be checked by them that is found and may be confiscated.....I guess I will call city and find out about local parks! Thanks.

Where in nothern MI are you? Each park is different. The state parks have many that are off limits, some that have restristions, and some that are ok.
Schools that are public are ok, but don't go there while school is in session. Congrats on the old coins, you are doing great for a beginner!

God bless.

Mike

Not my fault! But always welcome here! :)

Welcome to CMD . Dig alot and post your finds. We like to look at others finds.:minelab::bounty:

Welcome to the forum and good luck on places to detect and be sure to take the junk with you and put it in a trash can and fill all your holes and then you will probably be okay....but if in doubt, it is better to ask and find out if :detecting: is allowed! I just hate to dig someone's hole and dig out the junk left behind by another detectorist, who put it back in the hole, or left it beside the hole and then it sticks out like a sore thumb or gets covered again! 'Tis better to leave the areas neater than when you find them, so there will be no trouble if someone watches you digging! Hope you find lots of goodies to post pics to show us! :) God Bless! Betty

I had a short hunt today at a school and came home with a sterling silver ring, a silver earring and a handful of clad.

Congrats, malaquin, on the silver ring and earring and other finds! Glad you could get out and do some :detecting: It was really nice here, today, and when Cliff and I were going to the dr's office for our check-ups, we passed the place I used to detect and (WOW) did I want to go find some goodies so much, but too tired by the time we left the dr's office and came home! Have to go get meds tomorrow and also groceries! God bless you and wife, to be able to detect and find the goodies! :clapping: Betty

Wow! you sure did good for just being into this for such a short time.
Northern Michigan? I thought the hunting up there was always bad? That's what I've heard.
Nice finds and keep up the work.

You are not far from me. I am in Houghton Lake area. I can tell you about the state parks. Local parks there may be different than here at HL. You can check with Township Offices in your local area and ask about metal detecting on property owned by the township. I did them a favor by asking about detecting just when they had need of someone to find a property marker for them. I saved them having to get a surveyor to find it. In turn I was given permission to detect on any of the township property I wanted. Even got tips on other places to detect.

I used to have a Garrett ACE 250 - sweet machine. I had owned almost Garrett only machines all my years of detecting...well I did try a couple Whites, a Fisher 1280-x, a Tesoro or two. My main machine now it the Minelab Explorer II for land and a Tesoro Stingray for water.

We will have to get together to do some detecting. Right now I am kind of limited - though laid off and have time I have no income so making a trip up your way for now is not possible. More than willing to share my local hunting grounds with you should you get down this way. Will send you a reply to your message with info about how to contact me so we can try to plan an outing in the near future if you're able to make it down this way. Let's keep in touch.

There is also another detectorist I have chatted with a bit who is in Grayling, though have not seen him yet or detected with him as yet. I have a friend here in HL who also detects with me from time to time. Have a buddy (Warthog) who comes up from downstate from time to time and we go detecting. I know there is a Sheriff Deputy in Roscommon who also detects with a Garrett ACE 250.

I'm thinking Northern Michigan needs a detecting club. I know of another detectorist in the Prudenville area and 2 others from West Branch who come here occassionally.. Run into a few others during the summer who come up on vacation.

Let's stay in touch. Watch for my private message here to you. God bless and happy hunting.

Depends on what you are looking for and where. I think I have found a lot of good finds up here and know there is more to be found.

Welcome to the forum. Great group of people. Seeking permission always is best even though you may think it is ok. I sought permission for our local parks and got it, but most of all it put metal detecting in a positive position with the local government. I work for the school corporation which helped there. Most public lands here in Connersville, Indiana and the area are ok, but I still ask first.

I have a White's Spectrum XLT purchased in 1994...I think, as it has been a long time! I really liked it and though it didn't go deep as the Minelabs, I found lots of coins and other stuff! I don't like digging deep holes anyway and the hip mount detector is light enough that I could hunt longer and not get so tired! Couldn't handle heavier detectors! I haven't found lots of rings like most of the ones on here have, but I have found some and some of them are nice!

I hope you and your wife get out often and find lots of nice coins and goodies! I still miss going :detecting: but it's better for me not to get sicker and Cliff needs my help! Right now, he has a sinus infection and is on Moxicillin for the sinus problems and on Prednisone for his breathing problems! He is not well at all and yours and all prayers are always welcome!

The dr brought me almost to tears, when he told me Cliff is in bad shape and not doing good at all, which I knew, but this really touched my heart as I have been with him now since Oct 2006 and we grew up together being 1-1/2 years apart! I'm the oldest! It would really hurt to lose him so soon since he has been with me! Our sister, Carolyn, would take it hard, too, as she and Cliff are close! She took it very hard when her twin brother, Larry, died a couple of years ago by suicide! We all miss him so much! She and Larry were born when I was 11 years old and Cliff was 9-1/2 years! So sad to lose a member of the family, whether biological or as Children of God! We are all members of God's family when saved in Christ Jesus! Praise God for His mercy and His grace! God Bless! Betty

Hey Ma--Prayers are sent for you and Cliff. God is in control. When God calls Cliff home, it is only for a short while, and you will be with him again, as we all will be, with no more pain or illness. Isn't God great!

Thanks DK and, yes, God is good and Cliff and I will be together again and with my other brother, Larry, and my sister, Carolyn, too, someday, but I still would like to have him here with me for a while long and Yet, I don't want him to have to suffer, as he isn't doing good right now at all. Has a sinus infection, which stops up his nose until he can't breathe his oxygen and gets very, very weak! He is on anit-biotics now and I think he will feel much better when the med starts taking affect and his nose is clearer! He breathes through his mouth quite often and the canula? is in his nose attached to the oxygen tubing! I call this his life line! He can't do much at all for himself, as his energy is depleted to the point that he can hardly move without getting out of breath! But with everyone's and your prayers and in God's mercy and grace by His Son, Jesus, I know that all things will be well either on earth or in heaven! Praise God and Thank You, Jesus, and Holy Spirit! God Bless! Betty
