Hi guys, I'm sure most people already have some sort of magnifier that you take with you or keep in your vehicle when you go detecting. You can buy magnifiers that are really expensive and some that are just plain junk. If you don't already have something or want a spare to keep in another location, I bought a couple of these sliding lighted magnifiers sold by Radio Shack a few years back. One for home and one for the road.
They are really clear and the sliding cover is nice because it keeps the lens from getting dirty or scratched. When you slide the cover open all the way until it clicks, it exposes a pretty bright LED. It takes 3 AAA batteries and I don't think I've changed them in either of mine since I bought them. It's 3X magnification and good enough for checking out dates and mint marks. With the sliding cover you can keep this in your pants or jacket pocket and coins, keys and other items won't scratch the lens.
Yesterday, I was in Radio Shack buying some components for a little project that I've been working on and they now have these on clearance for $3.09. I had paid upwards of $14 or $15 when I bought mine. Not sure if this clearance price is just in my area or nationwide. I thought this was a good deal even at the $15 price that I paid for the first two.
Here is a picture of what it looks like in the package. The UPC code on the back is 40293 02070. I think the Radio Shack part number is 630-0194. It measures 4.25" x 1.75" and it's about .75" thick at it's thickest point. I have used these things like crazy and maybe you can pick one up for yourself before they are gone. My local store had two and I bought one more to keep at the office.
