nickels galore

i dont know what it is but in the last 3 outings i have found more nickels than i have in the last 3 months. my wife went with me sunday for a 2 hour hunt and we found about 12 nickels. tuesday i went after work and found another 11 nickels and went this evening for another handful. must have found everything else and nickels are all thats left. its nice to find a lot but i wish the nickels could be silver. nevertheless i love my explorer2 and wouldnt trade or sell it for anything else. you just cant beat the tone id and also the conductive and ferrous readings tell you a lot. i use other detectors but dont feel nearly as comfortable with them as i do my explorer. maybe this weekend i can hear some of that low gold grunt and dig up a nice fat diamond ring. hope you all have a nice evening and happy hunting.

Nickels can be a very hard Coin to find when you bring into factor all the Trash and other Coins that one comes across in spots we hunt. You sure can notice the Nickels though when a site has been worked hard that's for sure. Congrats with the Nickel Galore outings you had! Were there any Old Nickels present??? Would be fun finding at least a Buffalo Nickel among all those. Hope you get that Gold Ring next time and Good Luck and HH to you in finding a few Silver Coins too.

no buffalo nickels this time round but i did find a 1917 buffalo across the street from the old school that i hunt. have found quite a bit of silver at the school too. such a large area to hunt and im sure i will keep making finds for some time to come.

Though not 90% silver like the dimes, quarters, etc., nickels minted during WWII were approximately 25 - 30% silver, so look through your nickels for those minted in the 1940 - 1945 range or so (I don't have my Redbook with me to state exactly), and all the silver war nickels will have a large "S", "D", or "P" mintmark on the reverse side of the coin. Keep up the good work with the nickels. JW

For me with the SE nickels became much easier as they tend to hit just a hair off the bottom of the screen.....when I see that 1/16" gap, it's almost always a nickel. In that case I don't go by the sound, just the cursor location. Good job on the nickels!!

I'd say what it is is cherry pickers leaving the nickels behind. That's because it means if there was any gold they no doubt discriminated that out too.

Silver nickels were dated 1942-1945 and every one, even the Phillys, had a mintmark above the dome on the reverse. They also made regular nickels for part of the year in '42 before switching to the silver ones.

yep i found a war nickel about 4 months ago and as luck would have it , it was a 1942 but was not one of the silver ones. but hey its old none the less and im satisfied. have a nice one and happy hunting.
