Nickels not so much! (ACE 250)

New ACE 250 owner, first outing, found it easy to use new detector to find pennies, dimes, quarters, without digging so much junk." Nickels not so much". Is it just me or when the detector sounds for and shows a nickel I seem to dig pull tabs. Is there something in the makeup of the nickel that causes it to show simular to pull tabs where other coins are clearer. Adjusted sensitivity back and force, did not seem to matter. Or is it inexperience?

It's just the nature of the beast. Pull-tabs and nickels chime in alike. And you will pull about 20 for every nickel you find once you get to know your machine better. And I have also noticed that wheat and zinc pennies have different tones from one another. Dig a hole and do a test yourself with various coins. HH & good luck

First, be aware that there are many types of tabs and it just so happens that several years back the tabs that started coming out apparently had less aluminum or something in them and they register as nickels on ALL machines. Supposedly, some can tell the difference between them and nickels, but I go by the id as several that id'ed as nickels WERE nickels even though they didn't sound right. One was a nickel on its side and several others had quite a bit of patina on them from other detectorists passing them up. By carrying a trash pouch, you can at least get them out of a site if you go there often. And, of all things, I have found coins masked by them.

Nickels and tabs fall into the same conductive range but then so do gold rings - so don't pass those tabs up. You'll have to dig some junk to get the gold.

I have trouble finding nickels too, but I have managed to find some. I find that if the signal bounces around, even a little, it's usually a pull tab. When I get a 5 cent signal, I try from several different angles, and if the signal is solid I dig it.

If one's hearing is sharp there is a subtle difference in sound between the two. If one has a tector with a knob controlled notch you can pretty much dial nickels in and tabs out. I used to do it all the time with my Tesoro Golden and I've got a pic somewhere of a big pile of nickels found one summer with that tector.
