Today was hot and humid and just plain awful. I drove about 30 miles to a large chain store that was supposed to have something I wanted to buy in stock (I checked on line and it was listed in stock) and they didn't. As I left I noticed they had a huge sign that read "salidas" and a tiny little sign below it that said exit. I decided I would not be going back there or to any of there other 1000 locations. I had some spots picked out to metal detect concurrent with my trip and the first site I arrived at was a park which closes for one week a year and it was, of course, this week. I asked If I could poke around and they said no. I moved to the local high school which looked promising but it was huge and there were about 1000 swings between targets. The area that looked most promising was full of construction equipment. Strike 2. I moved onto two elementary schools both of which had no grass areas and their playgrounds were pebbles instead of bark chips. This is usually not a problem for me unless the ground is like cement which both were. Strikes 3 and 4. I stumbled over to the middle school and had a little luck. I found the chain (maybe 925) with butterfly and key and about 15 coins. Problem here was this was the site for the community's summer school and I was asked to stay away from the building which looked to be the best detecting. Foul tip. I'll go back some weekend. I then started heading home with almost empty pockets, having not completed my errand and hot and sweaty. As I crossed the river I saw a park and when I finally found it I immediately found 2 coins. Promising. I then dug about 50 blobs of metal and an old timer asked me what I was looking for. I told him and he said that the place was an old boatyard and that there was probably a lot of scrap metal in the ground and boy was he right. I managed a few more coins and the Nitro coin. Nice Spanish gold isn't it? Look closely at picture 3. Still a great find! The big blob of metal pictured was supposed to be a silver dollar. Even imaged size B. I headed to one more spot that I had hunted and set a goal of 30 coins. In about 40 minutes I hit 30 coins and as I was swinging my detector on the way back to my truck I got a repeating signal that turned out to be a real nice coin spill of about 9 dimes and a nickel. Nice way to end the day.
On the way home for good I stopped at a Mom and Pop Hardware store and they had what I wanted. All of their signs were in English. They came right over to me and asked me what I was looking for and then got me one. They were supremely nice and thanked me for my business. I paid about 20 bucks more than I would have (at Lowes if you're wondering) and felt great about it.
I hate the way this new brand of paper towels I'm using folds in half. Nothing much to see anyhow.
