No match for John but...

If this is a repeat post it is because I did something wrong here. Oh well

These are the gold finds I managed to muster for the month of August. The "ice" in the left two rings are not real ice. Somebody ought to outlaw CZs.

Thank God for global warming as this has really improved things here in S. Ca.

Have a great day,

James

Great looking finds...I would have had the BigOne if I seen the two on the left in my scoop!//////////////HH////////Obn

those are some nice looking rings.......
congrats.... Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

Dont complain as I haven't gold for quite a while now.
Went down to the bay and only scored 3 pulltab's, I think I'm losing my touch.
That is sure a nice haul for one month, I gotta tell ya that!
HH and cheers

Aushunter,

Actually I thought it was a pretty decent month for weekend hunting. I hunted my butt off the whole month of June and came up with zilch. I thought I was losing my touch also. I think we all think that at some point. Yesterday I came up with zilch but I'll be out again today. Sometimes I think we are gluttons for punishment. It's been guesstimated that one out of a thousand people will lose a gold item at the beach. That sounds reasonable to me. If that is the case, it's really amazing that we find anything at all. I like to think of it in terms of odds which are a peculiar thing in and of themselves. For example if you flip a coin ten times and each time it comes up "heads" what are the odds that it will come up heads on the next toss? The answer of course is 50-50. In the context of detecting, at my skill level at the beaches I detect, I figure my odds are 1 in 400 for digging up a gold item. I've actually found gold on back to back digs but my odds of finding either one of those rings where still 1 in 400. Some people will say "it's the luck of the draw" but odds have nothing to do with luck. They are what they are.

With that said, what you can do is try to improve those odds by increasing your skill level which is what I think John and Clive have been able to do. Their odds may be as good as 1 in 100 for finding gold due to their keen sight reading and detector skills.

Any way you look at it, it is still enjoyable and there is no down side to detecting that I can see.

Have a great day,

Harvdog

it maybe true that 1/1000 lose gold at a particular beach ON A GIVEN DAY or over a given period of time (our beaches here in NY can get 40,000 people on a nice weekend day within a 6 mile stretch) - but there is 50-100 YEAR's worth of gold out there in the water just waiting for you to walk over it and pick it up......
